Mutter’s Magnificent Brahms Violin Concerto
Review of Brahms: Violin Concerto; Schumann: Fantasie,Op 131 by  zerbine28

Advantages: Mutter's eloquence and sensitivity in older recording are enhanced here.
Disadvantages: None at all!

..., especially those lovely intricacies in melody and time signature. Surprises await you in the rapid, unpredictable shifts in tempo and the occasional key change. Sweet, languid notes alternate with harsh ones. Seemingly chaotic at first, the work’s profound beauty reveals itself only over time. Running to twenty-two minutes, the first movement is long for a concerto, but the soloist gets a little break midway through. Mutter plays Joseph Joaquim’s cadenza (violin solo), entering with stirring passages that end on a high note held across several bars. Just when you think it has reached the summit, the violin dares to go even further, now more passionate and rapturous than ever, as the orchestra picks up the theme and proceeds to sound the closing chords. Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate scoffed at the manner in which the second movement opens... Read review

Amazing Baroque Classics for Solo Violin
Review of Telemann: Fantasias for Solo Violin by  mightyd

Advantages: True Baroque Classics and fun to play
Disadvantages: None really, apart from some can get difficult, but nevertheless enjoyable and problems are easy to overcome

...listening to these pieces, just imagine yourself playing them, its so amazing. You really need to try these pieces, whether that is listening to them or simply playing them. Some slow and elegant and others, fast and lively. They are a really amazing set of pieces which will astonish you like they did me and Telemann is now one of my favourite composers especailly of the baroque period- such as unique style and for SOLO violin. Absolutely Amazing!... Read review

Autumnal Thoughts Through Nostalgia
Review of Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures by  berlioz

Advantages: It is simply one of the finest pieces of music ever written
Disadvantages: How dare you ask of any disadvantges!?!

...this his reputation was upholstered even more with his openly patriotic and pompous music of the "Cockaigne (In London Town) Overture," "In the South (Alassio) Overture", and the first of his five "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", the middle part of the first march becoming somewhat of an unofficial national anthem. He was even knighted in 1904. In this vein the composer continued until 1914 (his two symphonies, Violin Concerto, and numerous choral works being in roughly the same style) when suddenly thunder struck. TONSILS, TO BRINKWELLS AND CREATIVITY The First World War put an end to the militaristic and pompous music of Elgar of the past as inappropriate and he did little composing during the war years, with only a few songs, the rarely performed symphonic prelude "Polonia" and the cantata "The Spirit of England" consisting his...
