Advantages: Great passion, beautiful melodies, unrestrained romanticism Disadvantages: The finale doesn't quite convince in it's purpose
HAPPINESS, OR TRAGEDY?
After the doom-laden confessional that was the Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky was finally getting more in peace with himself. His fame began to spread and by 1885 he was already considered a national hero. This time saw the maturation of Tchaikovsky's style from the more blatantly folk-song oriented works and the more youthfully turbulent ideas to a more mainstream and calmer drift. Following the Fourth Symphony came the Violin Concerto, the Second Piano Concerto, the colourful overtures Capriccio Italien (composed during his bright stay at Italy) and 1812 (with the famous cannon-fire finale), the subtle String Serenade, the elegiac Piano Trio, a couple of small operas, and the large scale Manfred Symphony, amid some smaller scale works, all predominately genial in character. As before, the cast is made up of professional vocalists and guest artists supported by the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the London Symphony Orchestra. Eric Shilling plays the Duke of Plaza-Toro and, although taking the tempo at a relatively slow pace makes a good effort with the character and the patter songs. Keith Michell, making his third appearance in the series, is the Grand Inquisitor ? Don Alhambra.
As with the rest of the series Douglas Fairbanks Junior introduces each act with a short anecdote. There is also a ?Life and Times Of Gilbert and Sullivan? storyboard on the DVD.

Advantages: Varied movements, esp. 1st and 4th. One of Mahler's most popular works. Disadvantages: 2nd movement a little weak.
magnificently onto the 4th and final movement which has the addition of a soprano voice. It is at the beginning fast-paced before tailing off into to calm and hopefully leaving you in that state.

Like so many classical scores these days it can be found very cheaply. In fact I have recently noticed many reductions in prices of classical labels, including HMV's own (down from Ģ4.99 to Ģ2.99 for some very popular classics) and 5 CD's for Ģ20 on the Naxos label. I would consider the first and last movement of Mahler's symphonyno.4 to be the most worthwhile, while the middle two utilize parts of both the others, but lack the distinctiveness remaining.
