Teldec's latest recording of star violinist Maxim Vengerov awkwardly couples orchestral ... more
with chamber music. The Russian wonder-fiddle performs Dvorák's Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur and Elgar's Violin Sonata with pianist Revital Chachamov. Most discs stick to one genre. When Vengerov has contrasted forms before, both composer (Brahms) and accompanist/conductor (Barenboim) were constant. Here one suspects record-company expediency, especially as the recording occasions are so different--Dvorák 1997 in New York, Elgar 1995 in Berlin. The note offers only the fact that Elgar once played under Dvorák's conducting as a spurious link. What do they take us for? The playing is excellent, however, even if the transformation from the grand to the intimate jars. The young Siberian plays Dvorák's mighty, singing and leaping concerto with a feel for central-European exuberance and Elgar's forlorn, whimsical and angry sonata with a sense of old man's introspection. Elgar's second movement is especially fine under Vengerov's bow. The pizzicato fizz-plunk motif knows a lost humour while the sailing second theme holds the expressive key to the work. It returns poignantly at the end of the finale, honouring the composer's lost and injured friends. Vengerov has no right to understand these things but he does. --Rick Jones

Advantages: Mutter's eloquence and sensitivity in older recording are enhanced here. Disadvantages: None at all!
As a fantastically talented eighteen-year-old, Anne-Sophie Mutter already awed me with her sensitive and thoughtful eloquence in her 1981 recording of the Brahms violinconcerto (with Herbert von Karajan directing the Berlin Philharmonic). However, there?s an even deeper understanding in Mutter?s reading of the Brahms piece on this newer disc.
This performance was taped live at the Lincoln Center?s Alice Tully Hall, New York City, in 1997. Kurt Masur conducts the New York Philharmonic in particularly inspired fashion. A difference of fifteen years separates the two recordings. In the time between, she married, had children, and then was widowed at a very young age.
When Mutter returned to her instrument, she would bring a greater strength, emotional depth and insight to her playing, lending a maturity and assuredness to her ...
Advantages: Classic Concertos for Everybody Disadvantages: Strings only!!!no woodwind...boo!
prominent.
Thus Vivaldi wrotes sonnets to accompany his music and to establish each thought in his mind.
It is obvious to say then that Concerto is labelled Spring through to Winter, with three movements within each season.
Most form again adopts the ABA construction, a favorite of Vivaldi.
These are as follows:
1: Spring: Concerto No.1 in E Major
Allegro / Largo / Allegro
This I think, is the most well known of the Concertos, and has been used on numerous car adverts and airline adverts. This is what most people remember Nigel Kennedy playing at the very beginning of Nigel Mania!!!!
The string compostion reflects the freshness of spring and depending on what recording you buy (trust me there is loads of
choice!) this normally sells the album, this movement is the most played also by a leading Classical Radio.
2: Summer: Concerto ...
Advantages: Well worth learning Disadvantages: can be a bit of a minefield.
Whether it is for yourself or your offspring, buying your first violin can be a daunting prospect - how do you know what you will need? Hopefully, this will help.
Before you go shopping, ask around - your teacher if you have one or anyone you know who plays the violin, if you can get a recomendation of a good shop, this will make your job easier. Better still, try to elicite the help of someone who alerady plays - the advice of someone who knows their stuff can be very reassuring, as well as useful.
The violin - you can really spend as much or as little as you like - you can pick up second hand Chinese violins for very little (Ł40?) you can spend thousands. Obviously, if you are starting out, you won't want a hugely expensive instrument. Spend what you can afford. Make sure the body of the violin is in good shape - avoid anything ...
