I'm surprised that this album works. Take something like The Wall, an album with a story to tell. Put it in your CD player and press the Shuffle button. Sounds awful, doesn't it? The fact of the matter is that you can't just shove Pink Floyd songs together without some serious thought. It's with some trepidation that I parted with cash to buy Echoes, fearing a poorly made compilation taken off other albums. Thankfully, that's not the case. Everything has been put nicely together with tasteful mixing to get from one tune to another. Naturally, I don't agree entirely with all of the choices here. There's a couple of songs that I would have put in to replace some of the tracks on here, but that's always going to be a tough choice when making an album from such a diverse band as this.
The album is the usual Pink Floyd fare, with lyrics ranging from "I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like" to Time's somewhat more profound "The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death". This album really does demonstrate a good cross section of Pink Floyd's musical and writing talent.
The performance is, as ever, breathtaking, the musical talent within the band being expertly combined at times with orchestras and male voice choirs.
In short, this really is a remarkable album. A great addition to the collection of any Pink Floyd-ophile, and a brilliant place to start for those dipping their first toe into this pool of musical brilliance.
Advantages: Double CD. everything you need for Floyd. Great art illutrations. good value for money, an Inspirational album Disadvantages: none
...of this album are in Echoes but one. 'Learning to Fly'. Much like The Division Bell, it is in a complete class of it's own and bothe these album are amongst my most treasured music. I respect the cover illustration for its modern yet strange theme….it conveys an idea of loneliness, beauty and all round uniqueness. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of the following:
Pink Floyd
Jimi Hendrix
Roger Waters
The Doors.
I've fallen ... ...suggest to you that you purchase this album. Find out the meaning behind it all. Some of my favorite tracks from this album include:
Echoes, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, One of these Days, Learning to Fly, Wish you were here, Comfortably numb.
Go on then. Go out there and get Echoes(the best of pink floyd CDx2). You wont be disappointed and I'm sure you'll agree that this album is in a league of its own. Go get it and come back and tell me what ...

Advantages: Features all the good stuff :-) Disadvantages: A few candidates have been over-looked
I'm always a bit apprehensive about buying a greatest hits.....but after looking at the track listings - I was satisfied and decided to buy it.
This album has slowly grown to be one of my favourites. The songs encompass the entire career of Pink Floyd (even if they aren't in any particular order). The songs are mixed together well and flow together as if it were a new album of new songs. I was shocked to see a few minutes shaved off some of the ... ...noticing.
CD 2 is definately my favourite - and through over listening I have discovered a huge love for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
A few glaring omissions are my only complaints. For example "Speak To Me/Breathe" and "Be Careful With That Axe Eugene" these are the two I missed most on this album.
In conclusion - I can say that this is a pretty good album that is very listenable to. It's no "Dark Side Of The Moon" or "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" ...

Echoes Review ofEchoes (The Best Of Pink Floyd) - Pink Floydby
djzs1999
Advantages: Nice collection of songs if you're new to Pink Floyd Disadvantages: Not for people who has the essencial Floyd albums in their collection
If you've never heard about Pink Floyd which I almost can't believe, this is a nice collection to start with. Real Floyd freaks won't buy this stuff however there are some rarities on this album. It's a shame that the title track "Echoes" is a short version of the original song found on the album "Meddle". Also consider that some songs are picked out from concept albums and from my point of view, these songs are not so strong as a stand alone song. ...

Album Notes: Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright, Syd Barrett. Producers inlcude: Pink Floyd, Michael Kamen, Bob Ezrin, Joe Boyd, Norman Smith. Compilation producer: James Guthrie, Pink Floyd. Digitally remastered by James Guthrie. Through their long history, Pink Floyd moved through psychedelia, prog-rock, space-rock, and more, emerging as a pioneer in all of those styles. This two-disc compilation takes on the formidable task of creating a definitive Floyd collection. Though there's no chronological running order to give a sense of the group's development, there are plenty of key tracks from all the eras of Pink Floyd's career. We're given a healthy dose of material from the band's psychedelic '60s period, when they were spearheaded by the ultimate acid-damaged genius Syd Barrett (the loopy "Bike," the otherworldly "Astronomy Domine"). The most overtly progressive tendencies of '70s Floyd are aired on the glorious epic "Echoes," whose suite-like construction shows off both the band's technical facility and orchestration skills. Naturally, there are some cuts from the band's watershed album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, one of the best-selling LPs of all time (the gospel-tinged "The Great Gig in the Sky," the near-funky capitalist plaint "Money"). Hardcore Floyd fans might object to the number of songs from the post-Roger Waters era, but even these less-celebrated tunes work in the overall historical context. While it's easy to quibble about the absence of various Floyd favorites (no "Interstellar Overdrive?"), there's so much crucial music on this collection that it's impossible to come away from it without a strong sense of what Pink Floyd such an important band.
Album Reviews: Q (12/01, p.153) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Captures the essence of one of our major rock bands, from Barrett to Waters to Gilmour as CEO, and distilling this 30 years war into something coherent. It certainly has a pop..." Entertainment Weekly (11/16/01, p.133) - "...A smartly nonchronological, cross-fading song sequence flitting between the butty-Syd, ranting-Rog and spacey-Dave eras..." Mojo (12/01, p.108) - "...Beautifully remastered and carefullt sequenced, allowing unexpected juxtapositions to throw up nice effects..."
