I'm surprised that this album works. Take something like The Wall, an album with a story to tell. Put it in your CD player and press the Shuffle button. Sounds awful, doesn't it? The fact of the matter is that you can't just shove Pink Floyd songs together without some serious thought. It's with some trepidation that I parted with cash to buy Echoes, fearing a poorly made compilation taken off other albums. Thankfully, that's not the case. Everything has been put nicely together with tasteful mixing to get from one tune to another. Naturally, I don't agree entirely with all of the choices here. There's a couple of songs that I would have put in to replace some of the tracks on here, but that's always going to be a tough choice when making an album from such a diverse band as this.
The album is the usual Pink Floyd fare, with lyrics ranging from "I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like" to Time's somewhat more profound "The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death". This album really does demonstrate a good cross section of Pink Floyd's musical and writing talent.
The performance is, as ever, breathtaking, the musical talent within the band being expertly combined at times with orchestras and male voice choirs.
In short, this really is a remarkable album. A great addition to the collection of any Pink Floyd-ophile, and a brilliant place to start for those dipping their first toe into this pool of musical brilliance.

As a floyd fan i feel this best of's greatness is overshadowed by the poor production and irtatingly for newcomers the best of best with nothing else, to put it simply to me a greatest hits cd should definitely have at least 2-4 rarities or unavailble tracks for die hard fans as well as newcomers as well as a 'New' released single not available on an album take the Manics 'Forever delayed' best of it's perfect it has 4 unavailable rare amazing songs on and 1 just released unavailble to any album single, so if i own all the albums i can get this without knowing ive wasted some cash plus a best of should have an alternate 2 disc limted edition like the manics one which i got sealed off amazxon for 99p believe it or not lol, It's good and i'm proud and glad Gilmour put so many Barratt tracks on it like he deserved but he ruined Shine on which is arguably teh best song ever composed by shortening it and cutting out the cream and echoes was cut and pasted like some primary school collage urghh, If ya can get this below a tener then get it i feel but above don't really try getting the best albums instead, to put it in my opinion this cd could absolutely ruin and limitise your curiosity to get deeper into a band which could become your fave band ever(-: good review though

This is a really really good double album, but I agree with you, there are a few tracks that really did deserve to go on there that didnt make it, shame. Still a quality buy though.
