Album Notes: Fruit Bats: Eric Johnson (vocals, guitar, banjo, piano, keyboards); Dan Strack (vocals, guitar, ukelele, clarinet).
Album Reviews: Mojo (1/02, p.95) - "...hell-why-not musical sensibility...a country band can quote Prince...looping acoustic guitar, flat-picked banjo and pedal steel sounds like they were made to be played with synthesized waterfalls....memorable, often beautiful..."
Advantages: Superb lyrics, top music, multi-layered melodies Disadvantages: A bit short for a CD
...technique to use, but it bears fruit for the songwriter, as the listener will be able to spot new things throughout the lifetime of the song, as I often still do now – a extra few bars of a melody in the piano, or a drum pattern hadn't noticed before. Not only is it beautiful, but it adds longevity.
- Beauty is not just in the music
I love the album cover of this album, and of it's sequel. The concept for this cover was thought up by Jim Steinman himself, but it was realised by Richard Corben. It pictures a man on a beast of a motorbike breaking through the ground and out of a cemetery, with a huge bat rearing it's head on a nearby church or chapel. It's quite a powerful and beautiful image, and it beats all modern attempts at cover art hands down.
- For that, I thank you
Taking one of the lines of the last song is probably the best way...

...Let’s face it, Bat out Hell if a classic. Each song is memorable in it’s own right but two stand out to me, Bat out of Hell with it’s revving of motorcycles and it’s piano; and the other is Paradise by the Dashboard Light which lasts forever and has three brilliant parts to it. Jim Steinmen’s writing ability reached it’s peak with this album and the worldwide success it enjoyed just proves the point about how good it is. It spent over 300 weeks on the UK charts alone. If you enjoy rock then buy this album. 70’s rock was the best in terms of rawness and rockiness...

Advantages: Great voice, great songs ! Disadvantages: None
...Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf is one of those albums that every household should have, it truly is a classic ! It begins with the wonderful title track which continues for several minutes, building up into a wonderful crescendo. Meatloaf has an amazing voice, the lyrics & music are both brilliant & very exciting. This is definitely an album you will play over & over again for many years. His style is usually labelled as rock, but he has the ability to deliver a beautiful ballad or a rock 'n' roll number just as effectively. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad is my second favourite track, after Bat Out Of Hell itself, but each track is very well done. His style is very theatrical, almost operatic & this needs to be turned up loud to get the best effect ! Highly recommended !!...
