career now well into its third decade, she's danced with Hot Gossip, been a teenage pop star, developed into a seasoned West End and Broadway musical star, and extended the range of her pure, classically trained soprano voice for the opera stage and concert platform. British critics, unable to pin down an obvious but diverse talent tend to dismiss her as the flaky ex-wife of Andrew Lloyd Webber and leave it at that. But as this 1999 South African concert shows, she's a megastar beyond her own homeland.Brightman is a guileless artist with eclectic tastes, from Queen to Puccini and Morricone. She remains loyal to her former husband's work and is at her best in the numbers fromPhantom of the Opera. In other hands some stuff could be overripe: an Italian version of "My Heart Will Go On", and the ubiquitous "Nessun Dorma", for example. But her sincerity and soaring voice carry it all off. And Brightman proves herself a thoroughbred live singer, knocking today's manufactured pop babes into a cocked hat. The programme also includes an interview with the singer. --Piers Ford

I think there couldn't be enough words to write about the beautiful voice of Sarah and the emotions she evokes by her songs. I think Sarah Brightman may be considered as the first real european singer, as she really carries, inside her songs, all the colours of european cultures. But especially I'd like to praise Sarah for her last work, Harem. I think this is an absolute unique masterpiece of music, a fine miscellaneous of arabian sonorities and an incredible magnificent voice. I like to travel and learn about other cultures: recently I've been in Tunisia and I was fascineted by the melodies and rythms of arabian songs and music. I must say that I've found in the last Sarah's songs a gift of what I met and left in the atmosphere of the arabian songs I learnt in Tunisia. I think last Sarah songs are absolutely unique and deep in rythms and melodies, most definitely a masterpiece of the international music production. I think Sarah is the first pure european (here meant as "singer of the European Union") singer, as she can devinely sing in english, french, italian, spanish, varying easily form pop to lirics, but I think she is also a singer of the world, as she is able to carry in her songs the sonoroties, the melodies and the atmospheres of many different countries. Congratulations Sarah!

Engineers include: Michael Soltau, John Timperly, Frank Peterson. With EDEN, Broadway diva Sarah Brightman ("Requiem," "Cats") stretches beyond the constraints of what's considered show music. Here, she sings an assortment of classical adaptations, rock, and sleek modern pop songs. The entrancing opener, "In Paradisum" combines pre-recorded nature sounds, atmospheric textures, and echoes of Gregorian chant, setting the regal and eclectic mood. "Nella Fantasia" is an adaptation of a tune by movie soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone, with Italian lyrics by Ferrau, and here the exquisite longing in Brightman's voice transcends all language barriers. She transforms Kansas' philosophical hit "Dust in the Wind" into a theatrical ballad that transcends time or setting. The production is lavish, judiciously mixing lustrous, gently throbbing modern pop textures, and conventional orchestration in a way that showcases the songs and the singer without being obtrusive or maudlin.
