, and so when the Sheriff (Robert Mitchum), who happens to be an old friend of Wayne's, puts him straight about the job, Wayne refuses it.
Unfortunately in the meantime MacDonald has heard that a gunman is coming into town for them and leaves his son on Wayne's route to warn the rest of the family when the stranger approaches. Wayne shoots the kid in self-defence, and takes him home to his family. Shortly after that he leaves town to find work, and hooks up with a young kid who's good at throwing a knife but terrible at shooting a gun. They hear that the Sheriff in ElDorado has had his heart broken and as a consequence is doing nothing but drinking all day and night. Because of this, Jason has hired another gunman, equally as fast as Wayne, and is planning on using the Sheriff's demise as his opportunity to take over the MacDonald land ...

Advantages: lovely scenery, good co-stars Disadvantages: John Wayne puts no thought into his character
As you probably guessed from the film this was hubby?s film choice, think he is going through his John Wayne season now just to annoy me!
The film stars John Wayne who plays the role of Cole Thornton who is a hired gun hand. He returns to ElDorado after a few years absence where he meets up with his old friends, one being Sheriff J P Hara. Cole warns Hara that he is there on business as the big business man wants to hire his to take some land from the neighbouring land owners so he can control the majority of ElDorado. After Cole and Hara send some time catching up Cole decides that he will not take the job and sets off to tell the business man he will not accept his work.
Cole leaves town to take up more work but he soon overhears a discussion in a bar where a man has come back for revenge after his best friend got shot ...

Having watched a preview of The Road to ElDorado I would recommend it as a family friend. I took my 16 year old son, who expected to be bored but sat watching it intently and occasionally laughing. I also took my 9 year old son who enjoyed it as well. The storyline was good with many signs of humour, both for adults and children. The music was from Elton John and Tim Rice and was the standard you would expect from them. Watch out especially for the horse. I really could not find anything to fault it as a family film, except perhaps the price of the popcorn! ...
