Advantages: Tracks like Who and Muscles Disadvantages: Too many mediocre tracks
...Riding high on the success of her multi-million selling album, Why Do Fools Fall In Love (1981), her first project for RCA Records, Ross returned to the recording studios at the dawn of 1982 to self-produce another studio album (her contractual obligation was to deliver one album per year for RCA).
Ross was clearly enjoying experimenting and divulging her music into other genres. With SilkElectric (1982) she completely tried to shake off and escape the style that had made her famous. Ross was obviously trying to create a new, distinctive sound to keep up with the ever changing musical tastes of the 80's but as a result her music lost a lot of its fire on this album.
However SilkElectrics' premier single was something of a pop masterpiece. That track was of course the slinky, evocative Muscles written and produced by the all...

Advantages: great if you like black american soul / r&b ( the boys II men sound) Disadvantages: none
...This group are really better known for the track "freak me" but the tracks on this album are all pretty good. Although there is nothing that really stands out musically, its an accomplished and polished style that I personally quite like.
I bought it for the track "freak me" which hit the UK charts way back then. Typically for me I guess - but I loved the whole Boys II Men sound and these Silk boys seemed to be a bit 'edgier' - The line " let me lick you up and down" did it for me as a 21 year old clubber!
Their sound is similar to other soul type boy bands ballads and up tempo mix - BUT - it just seems a little funkier, grittier maybe?
If youve heard freak me - that generally is the style of the remainder of the album. You'll probably enjoy this album more though if you're keen on other groups like the afore mentioned B II M...

Advantages: A memorable chapter starting the second half of 'The British Invasion' Disadvantages: An album that marked the closing of an era of creative composition
...themselves 'Graduate' after a term used in Janov's work for new pupils in his primal scream therapies, they struggled to find any form of success with four singles and an album that all failed to enter either charts. On dropping all the other members in 1982, they quickly found success in their first hit, then changing their name to 'Tears For Fears,' another term used in the primal scream therapy.
'Songs From The Big Chair,' was, unarguably, the epitome of all that was the greatest albums of the decade. With their electronic sounds and synth based heavy drum beats, they captured the art of melting their soul searching lyrics making them world wide news over night. Thoroughly directing their healing process through their music, they had devised a way of expressing their personal hurt and anger. Not in the least political, although causally...
