Tunes for life 4 - One step higher
Review of Cafe Del Mar Ibiza Vol.5 (Compiled By Jose Padilla) - Various Artists by craiggy_boy

Advantages: Some astoundingly moving tracks, unbeatable for its chill value
Disadvantages: A little inaccessible at times

Ahh yes, the lovely old compilation CD …. It seems that they’re released one after another – filling our music shop’s shelves with different colours, genres and names every week. Not a night goes by when I don’t see “New mega hits – the best ever volume 5” advertised on prime time TV; and I often wonder how much money the music industry is making from people who will go out week after week, to buy albums ...
...together and consistently bad … It appears to me though, that there are different styles of compilation CD. These fall into 2 distinct types: the dance mix CD, and the stand alone track CD. Now I can quite happily sit down and listen to a whole disc of the mix CD nature from start to finish– because let’s face it, they’re designed that way. If you go to a club you can’t hit fast forward if you don’t like what’s ... Read review

Cafe del mar....Volume 6
Review of Cafe Del Mar Ibiza Vol.6 (Compiled By Jose Padilla) - Various Artists by markfarrow

Advantages: Oh my, too many to list.
Disadvantages: Absolutly none.

...Jose's last compilation in the cafe del mar series, as i have said before, this is where i stopped buying these cd's. For me no one else could put them together in the same fashion. I started reviewing this series with the first offering and have now jumped to the last, I hope to find the time to review the rest soon, but i have fishy presure at work at the moment (if you read my last review you'll understand!!) So here we are, number six and the ...
...the lengdenary DJ from the Cafe del mar in Ibiza. Once again he has mixed tracks of different genres, some traditional guitar, others are electric, some have a soulfull feeling and, of all things, Dusty Springfield!! No one else would get away with this. That last track, Dusty Springfield, The look of love, is the perfect track to finish this series on. It sums up, for me, the whole idea of this compilation, love who you are, love who other people ... Read review

Looking for a new CD with a chilled sound?
Review of Cafe Del Mar Ibiza Vol.7 (Compiled By Jose Padilla) - Various Artists by bowdeni

Advantages: Relaxing,
Disadvantages: May not suit everyone

...junk commerical english release. The Cafe Del Mar series have provided me with music to work and relax to. Cafe del mar volume 7 is my personal favourite offering artists such as Bent, Bush, Moby & Lux. The sound of the ablum is very laid back and awesome for a hot summer day. The tracking listing is as follows 1. Northern Lights - Lux A fantastic slow start to the album. Featuring no vocals, the track has a slow, mediterrian sound to it. 2. Breather ...
...for the album. Relaxex, typical cafe del mar sound. 7. Winter Pagent - Aromabar Really nice track. Just emphasis' how strong this album really is. Featuring english female vocals, it tells a story of a relationship at a younger age. 8. Beautiful Strange - Bedrock Probably not one of the strongest tracks, but still a good listen. 9. One More Try - New Funky Generation feat. Joy Rose This track features a very spanish sound with once again english ... Read review

Spokes on vinyl
Review of Spokes - Plaid by pentascape

Advantages: Will blow you and your sound system away
Disadvantages: Some tracks can be very wierd

Firstly I would like to say a few things about reviewing music in general: reviewing music should not just be about listening to some tracks and coming up with an opinion - it should be an account of the whole experience from the album cover right through to the way it makes you feel. I will try to be as unbiased as possible, as I do like Plaid a lot! The Album Cover Before even listening to plaid, check out the album cover. I have the vinyl ...
...is a work of art. There is not a single work on the cover, inside or out, other than the artist and title in that brilliantly obscure font and the copyright notes on the back which take up less space than the barcode. Annoyingly there isn't a track listing on the back. Fortunately, I already know all the tracks well after hearing this music from other sources. The vinyls themselves have the track names on them in the same interesting font as the ... Read review

One for the purists
Review of Rest Proof Clockwork - Plaid by gantzgraf

Advantages: Easy Listening. A Classic for I.D.M purists.
Disadvantages: Bland forms of electronica. Nothing new. Repetitive.

Rest Proof Clockwork was released in 1999, alongside it's companion Ep, the Plaid Peel Session. It is a nice little upbeat electronica album; not as well crafted as Double Figures, not as eccentric as Not for Threes... but still a nice oldschool I.D.M release. The album has a running time of 65 minutes approx. and this is spread out into 15 tracks. The cover art and inlay are by Kid Acne and the photography by Catherine Stevens. The album opens ...
...the strong moments available on Rest Proof Clockwork. Tearisci is another great interlude, clownesque and slippery, like a glass bell chorus. Dang Spot is deceptive; it starts off in a dreamlike tone and then propels itself into a pathetic low-end Casio keyboard hymn. Pino Pomo is an instrumental piece, very welcome indeed after the atrocious Dang Spot. It features non-electronic percussions by Rowan Oliver and double-bass by Max De Wardener. ... Read review
