²p #9 - A trip beyond techno with Tom Jenkinson.
Advantages: jazz 'n drill, drum 'n bass, mind ping-pong & intelligent techno (NOT dance music!) Disadvantages: before listening to SQUAREPUSHER, a sound introduction to psychedelic, polyrhythmic, progressive electronica is highly recommendable
. Tom Jenkinson a. k. a. SQUAREPUSHER makes the kind of music that might get stressful and annoying at times but which will never get boring or stale. Dabbling in electronic music since 1995, he has since become a master in the art, and is known for his chaffing breakbeats and dentist's drill sounds. However, he also plays the bass and has bona fide jazz influences. Quite often he samples himself to get raw material for his painstakingly constructed ... ...de-constructing and re-assembling rhythms and you'll have to talk about Tom Jenkinson. He is to drum 'n bass what Jimi Hendrix was to rock 'n roll: desecrator of mausoleums, resurrector of spirits, innovator of styles. SQUAREPUSHER might not be as well-known as his label-mate (Warp & Rephlex records) Richard D. James (a. k. a. APHEX TWIN), but he is at least as important in terms of musical endeavours into the hitherto unthinkable. Just about three ...

Tomas Jenkinson's odd one
Advantages: A few good tracks with nice jazz instrumentation. Disadvantages: Boring acid loops. Clichéd rubbish.
...he would release this album, Selection Sixteen.
Selection Sixteen is, in my opinion, a flawed album; it could also be seen as a joke in which Tom would exorcise his dread of the ordinary and the clichéd, by reproducing it- but I think it could also be seen as a transition between his 1998-99 period and his latter works Go Plastic (Warp, 2001) and Do You Know Squarepusher? (Warp, 2002).
Selection Sixteen has a running time of 46 minutes approx. ... ...beautiful and colourful sound, finishing Selection Sixteen off with a fairly good track.
I shall conclude by saying that Selection Sixteen is one of Squarepusher's weakest efforts. It does however contain some precious moments, such as Cool Veil, Freeway, Yo and the nameless track nbr 17.
If you want to hear some real 1999 Squarepusher, try out Budakhan Mindphone instead.

Squarepusher - Just a Souvenir (2008)
Advantages: composition, sonority Disadvantages: difficult to comprehend, musically
...listening to his new album Just a Souvenir which is available on Bleep while it's still hot, and it's mouth watering. Jenkinson keeps cranking out estimable drum machines and basslines, this time with a traditional distortion/rock twist in tracks like Tensor in Green and Planet Gear. It even sounds like there are some virtuous improv interludes between songs. Be wary, Squarepusher has always been highly technical and somewhat difficult to understand, ...

Drum & Bass or Not?
Advantages: Broad range of musical styles keeps album intresting Disadvantages: 2nd disc is a disappointing
The problem with Squarepusher is always trying to catagorize his music, and this album is no exception. Everything from IDM, Drum & Bass and acid through to experimental electronica and jazz is covered. On that note, take caution, if you are purchasing this album because of tracks such as \"Come On My Selector\" from the album \"Big Loada\" this may not be for you.
While tracks like \"Hello Meow\", \"Planetarium\", \"Rotate Electroylte\" , \"Welcome ... ...complicated drums & structure of typical uptempo IDM tracks the remaining 6 tracks are alot more ambient. While this is a puls in one sense of adding more variety to the album it makes it a little difficult to get into the album, as the changes in style can be quite distracting.
This is not to take away from Mr. Jenkinson in anyway at all (in my opinion one of the greatest all round musicians to date). The musical ability required to create this ...

Not so much IDM, as ADM.
Advantages: CD2s live recording Disadvantages: CD1
...up of 7 tracks:
1. Do You Know Squarepusher?
2. F-Train
3. Kill Robocock
4. Anstromm-Feck 4
5. Conc 2 Symmtraic
6. Mutilation Colony
7. Love Will Tear Us Apart
Track one is the previously unnamed track which caused a storm on dancefloors back in 2001, and gets the album off to a great start.
Kill Robocock then ruins the album by being what can only be described as noise, there's so much going on.
The other tracks are pretty undescribable, ... ...a credible cover of Joy Division, but nothing to write home about, I found myself waiting for it to kick in.
CD 2 is a live recording of a performance at the Fuji Festival, its definately better than the first CD, and is the only reason I'd recommend buying this CD for. ...
