Advantages: Unconventional and more refined than the previous album Disadvantages: An acquired taste. Sometimes so random/glitchy that there is no cohesion.
"Rounds" is the 3rd album released by Four Tet (AKA Kieran Hebden) in 2003. I bought the album a while back after reading a number of positive reviews, skimmed through it once or twice, was disappointed with what I heard and then never played it again. I have dusted off the cd and am listening to it now to see if my opinion has changed since then. The musical style is sample based with an emphasis on instrumental samples to provide the melody combined ... ...DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin and Cinematic Orchestra. There is a playful tone in this album - tracks will glitch, reverse or randomise unexpectedly, or a new sample will be dropped in without warning. This is very helpful in preventing looped samples plodding along predictably - a problem the previous album suffered from. For example, the last track "Slow Jam" has a rather serious guitar melody giving you the impression of a grand buildup.... before an ...
Advantages: Unconventional Disadvantages: Not enough going on to maintain my interest
"Pause" is the 2nd album released by Four Tet (AKA Kieran Hebden) in 2001. I bought the album a while back, skimmed through it once or twice and then never played it again. I have dusted off the cd and am listening to it now to see if anything has changed. The musical style is sample based with an emphasis on acoustic samples to provide the melody combined with more obscure samples and sound fx. There are usually no vocals at all on each track, so ... ...order to maintain interest.
The inherent problem with sample based music is that looping the same sounds over and over again gets repetitive and quickly bores the listener. Variety is the name of the game, especially without any vocals, so the beat needs to be more complex than usual and/or the samples used need to be especially catchy and melodic. "Pause" suffers from this problem and really struggles to overcome it - despite Four Tet's best efforts ...
Advantages: Does what it says on the tin Disadvantages: Doesn't do much more than that
...There are far too many remixes of the same songs, making the CD far too repetitive, for example there are FOUR attempts at “A Joy”. Fans will be disappointed to find his most famous (and possibly best) song, “As Serious as Your Life” rendered unrecognisable. I think it is safe to say that Four Tet should stick to what he does best. ...
Advantages: A blend of intricate beats, varied jazzy melodies and experimental soundscapes. Disadvantages: Over-tweaking disrupts the ambience occasionally. No mainstream appeal. Some tracks don't work.
Take a Swiss-Italian ambient trance producer (Robert Miles) and blend together with an Indian percussionist (Trilok Gurtu). Add other talented musicians to the mix and allow to simmer gently, making sure you season generously with electronic sculpting and processing. The resulting album is an interesting fusion of acoustic instruments, electronic processed sounds, intricate beats, jazz and experimental soundscapes. Released in 2004, “MilesGurtu” ... ...the dream trance that he became famous for. It builds on his previous album “Organik” (released in 2001), which was his first attempt at creating an experimental sound. This album is characterised by being completely instrumental although 3 tracks feature vocal samples. Double bass, strings, guitar and rhodes performances feature frequently, creating delicate melodies whilst complex beats are generated from drums and tabla. Many tracks shift and ...
