Advantages: Masterpiece
Disadvantages: Acquired taste

...Portrait of an American Family was the debut of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids as they attempt to break onto the the mainstream music market. Although subsequent albums such as Antichrist Superstar, Holy Wood and Mechanical Animals were significantly heavier, darker and better produced, Portrait of an American Family is a rollercoaster ride into the mind of Marilyn Manson. Portrait of an American Family's style can only be described as Willy Wonka meets Little Boo Peep, with its distinctive lyrics almost reading as a nursery rhyme. Portrait of an American Family showcases such classic tracks as "Cake & Sodomy", "Get Your Gunn", "My Monkey" and the nsettling "Lunchbox". These and many other tracks make the listener sit and think and consider the underlying message of the songs whilst the music envelops and reaches for your soul... Read review

Raw and Hardcore
Review of Portrait Of An American Family - Marilyn Manson by  MorganLaVey

Advantages: Raw, industrial sound that is sorely lacking in later albums. Original.
Disadvantages: Contradicting Religious references, quite poor guitarist

...previous knowledge of the subject, but this only occasionally poses a problem. Some of the tracks are unfortunately rather monotonous at first but even these songs grow on you as the riffs become more endearing then harsh - and it did take me a while to truly appreciate the research and hidden context behind many of the ideas present. This album has a distinct childish angle to it, there are multiple sound clips of children introducing and accompanying many songs but any misplaced idea of the band's innocence is quickly nipped in the bud by the introductions given to various songs by Charles Manson. The presence of this man is un-ignorable in Portrait as a song originally written by Charles Manson, My Monkey, is covered by the band, whose name is half taken from the man himself and the significance he inspires. Jazz guitar at its best
Review of Portraits - Martin Taylor by  Vodkaboy

Advantages: Great guitar, good jazz, relaxing
Disadvantages: few

...Martin Taylor is one of the - if not the - best jazz guitarists in the world. And that is not me talking, it is as voted, repeatedly, by jazz fans. He came to fame when he released his first album, "Taylor Made", in 1978 and was invited to tour with the great Stefan Grapelli, a partnership which continued through the 1980s. Taylor played on a number of albums with Stefan Grapelli but also went on to release several albums himself, some with his own band and others mainly solo. He has also worked with a number of other great musicians such as Chet Atkins (who features on three of the tracks on Portraits) Taylor is a self taught guitarist; he has developed a unique style of playing in which he picks several parts simultaneously.
