As a famous singer once crooned: "What a difference a day made…. 24 little hours…". Actually, scratch that thing about the day, replace it with a year. What a difference a year makes, eh? Little more than a year ago Hot Hot Heat were 'the next big thing', as lauded by an (as usual) enthusiastic music press, releasing their debut album 'Make Up The Breakdown' to critical acclaim, and embarking on tour supported by some bunch of unknowns from Scotland ... ...we see that Franz Ferdinand seem on the brink of taking over the world, followed by a gamut of other 'British Invasion' bands such as Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party, while those pesky Americans have hopped aboard the current craze for keyboards and guitars, with the Killers and the Bravery coming to prominence over the last year. Whack this album on and you are immediately lifted up a beat. I bought this album having been captivated by the funky 'Goodnight Goodnight' - Track 3. I'm glad I went with my instincts 'cos this album rocks from start to finish. Perfect indie Americana, great to get you dancing to. ...and bands like that were coming through and getting bigger and bigger. For me, The Strokes are a bit of a wash out, but HotHotHeat are here to stay, the 2nd album Elevator(which I will review at a later date) is an impressive step towards widening their sound and the songs on that album are all so much bigger and bolder, although retaining that keys-fuelled anthemic touch from this Debut. If you like rock music with a retro vibe, big choruses, memorable melodies and songs that make you wanto shuffle and sway till the cows come home, then I can safely say that this is the album for you. It also goes a little way to prove that Canada isn't just capable of producing artists such as Celine Dion, Alanis Morrissette and blooming Avril Lavigne. There obviously is some talent there, somewhere....
