This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including theirPorgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonise much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humoured roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), and they fly it like a kite. --Douglas Wolk

Vol. 2provides another overview of the whole "easy-listening" vibe, this time across three CDs--70 tracks in total. Unlike the first compilation, there is rather more filler here (Ben E King's "Stand By Me" and the Platters' "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" are terrific songs, but seem out of place here), but generally there is plenty of the aforementioned artists to keep any party swinging. Most impressive, however, is the bonus disc of "Christmas Crooners", which could have made a terrific compilation on its own, with classic contributions from Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and others. --Ted Kord
