"most emotionally affecting tunes," songs he connected to his real-life romance with his wife and daughter. Most notable here is the second disc, a collection of rarities, beginning with "It Wouldn't Be the Same Without You," one of the four known demos Presley recorded before winning his Sun contract. His tone here--pure and almost girlish--is the sweet sound of a boy who would be Dean Martin, not a revolution in the making. Private recordings of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Baby What You Want Me to Do" are so "living room" as to seem deliciously voyeuristic. But the most fascinating glimpse here comes as an alternate take of "You'll Be Gone," a song Presley wrote in 1962 with friends Red West and Charlie Hodge. Utterly awful, it finds him meandering into the squishy no man's land that characterized much of the period. He played it for the visiting Priscilla, who said she liked his rock 'n' roll stuff better, and, crushed, he supposedly never tried to write a song again. That was history's loss, but Priscilla ended up being a better A&R director than anybody else Elvis had around him at the time. And not a bad album packager it turns out. It also includes "rare, never-before-seen family photos".--Alanna Nash

So,I guess I consider myself a bit of an "Elvis-Expert"!
As most people will be aware from all the media exposure and all those single releases that dominated the top end of the charts from January until recently, this is the year that would have seen Elvis turn 70 years old and his Estate,Priscilla,BMG et al are not letting that pass without a chance for some more releases! But are they any good?
Well, this double CD set IS undoubtedly an opportunistic release-Priscilla has been all over tv and radio promoting her lavish coffe-table book and DVD of the TV Special. She and Lisa-Marie also allowed the use of Elvis' actual recorded voice for the first time ever in a Biopic this year-Jonathan Rhys-Meyers portrayed a convincing Elvis in the two-part drama that was well received in the US earlier this month(May).
However, despite being perceived by some as a "cash-in"cd, it has to be said that this shifted 50,000 copies in the States in its fiirst week of release-and that was before the tv show of the same name had hit the screen!! Now,one complaint I do have is that the second cd is so short, featuring only eight tracks-but I'll come to that later.Let's begin with Disc one.
The first cd contains a whopping 24 tracks that can be heard in the DVD and TV Special. The liner notes tell us these were specially picked by Lisa-Marie and Priscilla (Elvis' sole heir and ex-wife) and certainly fit well with sections of the Dvd/TV Special which tends to use the music to tell the story of Elvis' life and relationships with his then wife and daughter.Does it work on cd? Surprisingly, I feel the answer is a resounding "Yes!"
Although many fans will own these tracks several times over already, they flow well and tend to concentrate on the later period of Elvis' relationship with Cilla. So we get tracks like "Hawaiian Wedding Song","Indescribably Blue", "I'll Hold You in my Heart" to signify all is hunky-dory with the pair. Then, uh-oh,we get "Suspicious Minds" to tell us that something ain't quite right. We know how the story ends and so we finish up with "Separate Ways","It's Over","Always On My Mind" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling".This is great for me because I truly believe that although Elvis could sing absolute dross and make it the biggest hit since sliced bread, he was at his most powerful,heart-rending and emotional on tracks concerning subjects close to his heart-like these. In the "Elvis World",it is generally accepted that his marriage break-up contributed to his physical and mental decline, rendering him overweight and depressed.Listening to these-as I am doing now (with a shiver down my spine) proves that good can come from bad.
For good measure, you get lesser known tracks like "Welcome To My World" (incidentally used to good effect in the DVD as Priscilla introduces the viewers to Graceland) and one of my all-time faves-1973's "I Got A Feeling In My Body"-who said the King couldn't get funky in the Seventies?!
Disc Two only really offers one rarity to the hardcore collector-a fab outtake of the Rock n Roll classic "Jailhouse Rock", but there are also seven other tracks.Mainstream listeners may not be quite as bothered about demos, private recordings and outtakes BUT as the number are limited here to a total of eight, I defy anyone to not find one track of interest. For me, it has to be a toss-up between the demo of "It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You" and "Too Much Monkey Business".The first has the listener back in Sun Recording Studios where a young Elvis is desparately tring to impress Sam Phillips (the owner) with his musical prowess-he is young, beautiful and raw. The second has us in Nashville in 1968 where Elvis is simply having fun-and its great to listen to.As the sleeve notes tell us "knowing they are not yet at the final take,Elvis takes liberties with his vocal performance".The fun in his voice seems to send out the message that he knew he had (nearly) finished in the movies and was on the way back up.This was the year he was to tape his famous Singer-sponsored "Comeback Special".
All in all, this has to be a must-buy release for fans and non-fans alike. The sleeve notes are above average and you get a smattering of very private photos, some of which even I didnt recognise.Go out and buy it-you won't be disappointed. It's only once in a lifetime that a true legend comes along-Elvis Presley was mine.
Advantages: Great Songs, Great Sound! Disadvantages: None
I loved this album! Elvis by the Presleys is a must-have!
I love Elvis, but why should I buy this album? I also have a son/daughter who wants to get into Elvis, would this be the right album to buy?
Yes, definately! You should buy this album for your son/daughter and yourself as this album is comprised of some of Elvis' best and inspirational songs! You won't regret buying this album, trust me!
OK, so what songs ARE on there?
There are some great ... ...Dion and a digitally placed Elvis on the stage of American Idol on the show's chairty special: Idol Gives Back),Bridge Over Troubled Water, Suspicious Minds, My Way, Jailhouse Rock and A Little Less Conversation.
How's the quality of the tracks?
Darn tootin' good! The songs really come alive in this album. Superb sound!
How much will I have to pay for this album?

Try Not to Cry
A real rocker penned by Paul. Great guitar and snare. Fun!
Movie Magg
Carl Perkins song. Based on a true story, it involves Carl and his girlfriend going to the cinema on a mule. A real up beat, horse gallop of a song.
Brown Eyed Handsome Man
This was the single from this album. B-side was no other baby. This is Cajun/line dancing type stuff. Stick your thumbs in your belt loops and dance.
What It Is
Self penned by Paul. A quite heavy rocker. Enjoyable song that fits well as a sixties song written in the 90s.
Coquette
An obscure Fats Domino B side. This song is quite poor, but then again I was never a Fats Fan.
I Got Stung
A British NO 1 hit for ElvisPresley in 1959. A heavy (but good) performance of this classic song.
Honey Hush
I was never too familiar with this song, but again this ...
Amazing Grace the album!
************************
Tracy and me have had this album for some time so I thought I should opinionate it.
Now! I am definately not a religous guy (and nor is the missus,[she's a girl of course, just thought I'd clear that up] in case your wondering)
in any sense of the word, but I do like gospel songs. And who could sing them better than ElvisPresley????. ( no-one I would wager.).
So a few years ago we bought the Amazing Grace album byElvisPresley. Got to be honest, we have always liked Elvis music (which I like to play on my guitar in the privacy of my house where think knowone can hear me,[ the missus (tracy by the way) thinks different] generally when I've had a few beers [ sad I know ].)
Anyway (as I seem to be digressing from the point of this op!) to the album ...

Album Notes
Personnel include: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, Kathy Westmoreland, The Blossoms, The Imperials Quartet, The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations (background vocals). Compilation Producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen; Roger Semon. Liner Note Author: Michael Hill. ELVIS BY THE PRESLEYS is a two-disc audio companion to the 2005 television documentary of the same name. Selected by Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, the songs here underscoring thoughts about Elvis from his family's perspective. The accompanying booklet, full of home photographs and liner notes, explains the selection of songs, so that "Heartbreak Hotel" can be heard anew as a testament to Elvis meeting Priscilla, and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" as an allegory of their nuptials. The liner notes also suggest that certain songs point to aspects of the King's personality, such as his spiritual, "seeking" nature ("Peace in the Valley"). Disc Two features five previously unreleased recordings, including alternate takes of "Jailhouse Rock," "You'll Be Gone" (a song distinguished by a rare Elvis songwriting credit), and "Anything That's Part of You" (with vocal accompaniment by the Jordanaires). On the two private home recordings, however--takes on Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do" and Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"--the listener truly has the sense of eavesdropping on the King behind closed doors. This lovingly assembled package is ideal for casual fans and completists alike.
