In a way this review may appear to some people, well, a bit out of date or retro. It is just over twon years since this album was released, but because of my absence from Ciao, I have never had the chance to put my opinion forward. In fact, the majority of my opinions in the near future are likely to be about older products. Forget that thouh, enough of the psycho babble, lets get down to the reviewing.
Foreword: Eminem, Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers III, whatever you want to call him, is by far one of the largest and most markeable names on the planet. Some people love him, a lot of people hate him, but he has an undoubted talent that strikes a chord with many people around the world. This talent has been fulfilled completely in this release and it has to make you wonder whether he can surpass the huge expectations that will no doubt come with his next solo release.
Packaging: Unlike his previous three album releases, `The Eminem Show` has a much more vibrant front cover. I must just add before I move on that some people will argue that there were only two previous releases. For anyone that doesn't know, there was an album released in 1996 called `Infinite`. It was only released stateside and only sold in the region of 3750 copies so it has largely been forgotten about. In a nutshell, the three previous covers were very bleak and dull. `Infinite` portrayed a universe with stars, `Slim Shady LP` depicts Eminem and his daughter on a moonlit pier, and `Marshall Mathers LP` shows Eminem sat on the steps of his childhood home looking very much depressed. The cover of this album is a million miles away from that. It shows Eminem on a stage in a black suit, surrounded by a huge red theatre curtain. The brighter colours give out a more uplifting vibe than before and I think that this is Eminem showing a more upbeat approach about his life. At the time of writing this album, Eminem seemed to be happier, mainly due to the fact that he was given custody of his young daughter `Hailie`.
If you have made it this far and are not yet bored to tears then I must let you know that I intend to go as far as possible with this one. Take that as a warning and find some caffeine.
Track By Track Analysis:
Track 1 - Curtains Up (Skit) - Produced By Eminem.
The usual opening to an Eminem album. A funny, witty sketch featuring the Eminem alter ego `Ken Kaniff`, an openly homosexual guy that probably
bears testament to why many people call Eminem a homophobic.
Track 2 - White America - Produced By Eminem.
A very impressive opening track that takes a gripe at everything that was wrong with America at this time. It includes references to a crumbling education system, tells the people who say he is homophobic to basically shut it if they cannot take a joke and also makes a strong mention of the time he was discussed in congress. Although not released as a single in the UK, this song is etched in my mind because he performed it at the MTV Music Awards in 2002.
Track 3 - Business - Produced By Dr Dre.
A typical Dr Dre produced track with an uplifting beat and various well placed sound effects. Eminem uses this song to put across a message about the fact that despite many people campaigning to get him out of the music business, the reality is that it is just a business and it needs him more than he needs it. This track was released on the UK although as far as I can remember, it wasn't that successful.
Track 4 - Cleanin` Out My Closet - Produced By Eminem.
This trak has obviously been strongly influenced by his upbringing. He makes a lot of comparisons to how he will bring up his own daughter and that he wont make the same mistakes that his own mother made with him. Again, there are also strong references about the demonstrations that have been made against him. Overall, a very angry song with a very strong message. This track was also released in the UK as a single.
A very hard track to describe. In simple terms, it is a very bouncy and uplifting track. Here Eminem raps about various different aspects of america, including comments about President Bush and the current administration. Many references are made to terrorism and how America tends to react to it. The point that he tries to make is that the way things are going, the USA will end up moving back to the days of conscription.
Track 6 - The Kiss - Produced By Eminem.
Not a son as such, but more of a reconstruction. It depicts the events of a night when Eminem made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It was the time when he was lucky to escape a jail term for pistol whipping a bouncer who had allegedly kissed his then wife Kim. The track gives a dramatic insight into the events of that night.
Track 7 - Soldier - Produced By Eminem.
In this track we see Eminem put across a very strong message about himself. He wants everyone to know that even when he is in the face of adversity, he will always bounce back. He makes a big point that, and I quote "These shoulders hold up so much, they won't budge, I'll never fall or fold up". It is basically a direct response to the events depicted in the previous track.
Track 8 - Say Goodbye To Hollywood - Produced By Eminem.
This is another song that revolves around how close he came to being locked up. He talks about whether he should have ever became a rapper and about the disadvantages of fame. The basic message is in the song title, the message that once this album has been released, he just wants to get away from it for a while and re-evaluate things. You can tell that he blames his ex wife for much of what has happened. This is epitomised in the simple line "I'm not about to lose my freedom for no female". Overall, the track is another insight into the anger and frustration that he feels.
Track 9 - Drips - Featuring Obie Trice - Produced By Eminem.
The first track on the album that features a collaboration with another artist. That artist is Obie Trice who now has his own record on the the Eminem label 'Shady Records'. The track has a very strong moral message. It may surprise some people but it is a warning against having unprotected sex. The title 'Drips' is a basic slang word for a sexually transmitted disease, and is mentioned many times during the song. In a way, it nice to hear this sort of message on a album like this. The kids listen to every word these rappers say, probably even more than those of their parents, so it makes a change to hear something positive come from an album like this.
Track 10 - Without Me - Produced By Eminem.
The track that was the first release from this album. I would imagine that even if people have not heard the album, they will have at least heard this track. As always, with Eminem, the first release from his albums always seem to be like this. An easy word to describe it would be 'comedy'. Anyone familiar with his previous work should understand what I mean by this. It doesn't sound like the rest of the album and is always accompanied by a hilarious video. The genius thing is that it seems to attract a wider audience and sells albums. I have spoken to several people who bought the album because of this song, even though it turned out they did not like the rest. In the UK, this single did rocket to Number one.
Track 11 - Paul Rosenberg (Skit)
Another usual thing about an Eminem album. These skits appear two or three times and are usually pretty funny. This one features the manager of Eminem, Paul Rosenberg and as usual it depicts him as being unhappy with some aspect of Eminem.
Track 12 - Sing For The Moment - Produced By Eminem.
Yet another song with a strong message. This one seems to be directed at several targets, these being parents, the kids and fellow rappers. It follows a basic line, that parents and kids should not take everything he says literally, but that other rappers should be careful what they say because in reality, the kids do take most things to heart. Overall, a very impressive track with certain aspects that we cann all take somethin from. This song was also released as a single in the UK.
Track 13 - Superman - Produced By Eminem.
This is possibly my favourite track on the album. It is a light hearted but at times funny look at how Eminem views relationships since he broke up with his wife. It conveys the message that he is basically up for a one night stand but not all of the baggage that can follow. Some people may see this as a contradiction to track 9 'Drips', but for me it is just another extension of his controversy and unpredictability. For anybody interested, the video is quite good too and is part of the special features on the 8 Mile DVD.
Track 14 - Hailies Song - Produced By Eminem.
In a stark contrast to the previous track, I view this as the weakest track on the album. It is a dedication to his daughter so I understand that the song had to be of a softer nature but come on, this is not Eminem. He mentions at the start of the song that he can't sing but is going to anyway. The truth is, he is right. Say no more.
Track 15 - Steve Berman (Skit) - Produced By Eminem.
Another comedy skit, this time featuring a PR for Aftermath records, Steve Berman. On the previous two albums, Steve has only had bad things to say about Eminem but on this one he actually had something good to say. The only problem was, Eminem had already shot him!
Track 16 - When The Music Stops - Featuring D12 - Produced By Eminem.
The second track on the album to feature a collaboration, this time with a band in which Eminem is a member, D12. Another strong message is put across in this song, this time entirely to the kids and how rap stars have a responsibility to them. It explains that there is a difference between music and reality but some people refuse to realise it. A very strong track on this album and typical of a D12 featured track.
Track 17 - Say What You Say - Produced By And Featuring Dr Dre.
Another track with a strong beat that we all expect from a Dr Dre produced song. As ever, any track that features Dr Dre nowadays, is used by him to get back at everyone that critiscises him. This includes fellow rappers, industry moguls and the media. Both Eminem and Dr Dre do a very good job of putting the record straight to these people who knock them.
Track 18 - Til' I Collapse - Featuring Nate Dogg - Produced By Eminem.
In this track we see another collaboration, this time with Nate Dogg. He is probably most famous for appearing on the Dr Dre track, Next Episode and most recently, 21 Questions with 50 Cent. In this song Eminem tells us about a list of rappers that he respects and that the problem with the industry is that there is too much envy. Again, a subject covered previously in the album but done well also.
Track 19 - My Dads Gone Crazy - Featuring Hailie Jade- Produced By Dr Dre.
Yes, you did read it right, this track does feature his daughter, Hailie Jade. He was widely critiscised for this by his ex wife because she said that she had never given permission for this. The use of his daughter is in good effect and is quite a catchy song at times. He uses this song to get back at his own mother. It is nicely done and turns out to be a good track to finih off the album.
Track 20 - Curtains Closed (Skit) - Performed by Ken Kaniff.
Another comedy sketch performed by the open homosexual, Ken Kaniff. It is probably another last dig by Eminem at anyone who takes him too seriously.
Overall Verdict: If you have managed to read all of that then you will realise that my verdict is a big thumbs up. Opinions will differ, but it cannot be denied, Eminem is a true icon of his time. Do I recommend you to buy it...............of course, and his back catalogue, and anything he ever releases in the future. Work of art would be too strong a phrase but If I must give my personal rating I shall be diplomatic and go for 9.5 out of 10. Excellent.
