The Eminem Show

Released in 2002, this is one of Eminems strongest albums, it sold over a million copies in its first week of release and is Eminem singing and rapping about his life, from his popularity with some and lack of with others through his divorce, his personal feuds and his love for his daughter, this is a man basically laying himself bare, by the end you can see why he wanted the break from music he alludes to so often, he has basically given his life to music as entertainment and probably decides to have time for his family.

The album has some highlights including White America, Cleaning out my Closet and Hailies song, but there are listenable tracks throughout the album. Produced by Dr Dre but with some songs produced by Em himself, he allows other collaborators to perform to and the album is varied in content and style and thoroughly listenable throughout.

Track List

1. Curtains Up (skit)
Ken Kaniff an alter ego of Eminem opens the show, simply walking on stage and introducing the Eminem Show, this is 20 seconds long and doesn’t add anything or set the scene really.

2. White America

This is a really angry rant about everything Em felt was wrong with America at the time this album was made. Its about how he’s made it as a white rapper against a lot of prejudice and people ready to mock him at every turn, it also seeks to set the record straight and explain that Eminem is not Marshall Mathers and what he says in his song can be as fictional as a writers character in a book. This song is lyrically brilliant and the contrast of heavy bass drums and guitars give it a really heavy touch which when added to his hard aggressive rap makes for a great starting song on the album.

3. Business

Produced by Dr Dre, this has a fast paced beat and opens the Eminem Show, Em sings like a circus master at first introducing himself, he then flows about the music business and how people may hate him but make lots of money from him, as he’s something different to the norm and a multi-million selling artist.

As always the song has a high level of sarcasm and anger, but it is very, very funny, I love the line about his collaboration with Dre being the most feared duet since he and Elton John played Career Russian Roulette, its awesome and lyrically brilliant and develops into a crushing song. The song was released as a single but didn’t have the popularity of many others.

4. Cleanin Out My Closet

I love this song so much, it is an introspective masterpiece and one of the best rap songs of all time. A piano plays throughout the track overlayed by a rolling beat. Eminem spits out lyrics about his childhood and how with a mother like his, he couldn’t help what he became, he talks about his mother in very unhappy terms and compares this with his undying love for his own daughter. His rapping on this song is awesome it follows the beats perfectly and is powerful in a bitter resentful way, but is so eloquently explained that his comments have an air of truth to them. This was released as a single in 2002 and is still one of the best songs in his entire back catalogue.

5. Square Dance

I like this song an awful lot, it has the bounce and vitality of a square dance, but this paradigm of Americas deep south masks the fact this is a political attack on President Bush and America’s introverted foreign policy of the time ,the song criticises Bush for his management of his nation and his world views while questioning the war in Iraq and Bush’s reaction to terrorism. Bouncey, great beats and exceptional raps this is one of the slow burners on the album.

6. The Kiss (skit)

This is a recorded recreation of one of the major events in Eminems life, when he hit the headlines for pistol whipping a man he found with his wife. We follow Eminem as he hears the news his wife is having an affair and plots to get his revenge, this is just a part of his life story more than any real entertainment.

7. Soldier

Set over a marching beat, Eminem sets himself up as a soldier a man who will overcome his doubters and haters and keep going. He talks about his personal life and how despite him rapping about it, its nobodys business but his, this song has a great beat which keeps you hooked but the rap is vitriolic and filled with anger and its a memorable song, but not because you can sing along to it.

8. Say Goodbye Hollywood

Eminem talks about his fame, about his ex-wife and about how he wants a break from it all, this is almost a cry for help, its a good song and damned interesting but musically its one of the weaker songs on the album.

9. Drips feat. Obie Trice

I like this song, which introduces Obie Trice one of Eminems own record label acts, OT raps about how he got an STD from a woman. It is a funny and at times very good advert for safe sex, as with many of the songs the humour hides a more important message. Produced by Eminem, the fastly lilting rap is delivered over a piano and strings playing elegantly and in marvellous contrast in the background.

10. Without Me

This is one of the most commercial Eminem songs and will be well remembered by fans of MTV for its video mocking everyone from Osama Bin Laden to Michael Jackson. Produced and written by Eminem, the song is jaunty and really fresh, it was number one in a lot of countries and was the first released from this album, the lyrics are excellent, angry but humorous which is when Eminem is at his best and with a really catchy chorus and fantastic video. This is Eminem at his very, very best the Family Guy or South Park of Hip Hop.

11. Paul Rosenberg (skit)

Generally, Eminem's manager Paul Rosenburg appears on all of Eminem's albums, on this one we hear a conversation between Paul and Em where his manager is clearly not happy with the album, its a dig at all of Eminems critics and just goes to highlight how some people really misunderstand and misrepresent his music.

12. Sing For The Moment

With a rocky chorus (Dream on by Aerosmith is the sample I believe). The song is quite a thumper, it has a real melodic air and a singable chorus, it once again touches on the fact that the things he raps about aren’t real, he can’t be more explicit in relaying this and seems keen to point out that the traumas that get blamed on his music are just people who can’t take responsibility for their own actions. This is a powerful song which attacks American society for making him a pariah for its own ills, he eloquently explains that his songs are acts of fiction and that he mocks himself through them, it is catchy, stunningly produced and intelligently performed, this is a stand out track on the album.

13. Superman feat. Dina Rae

A song about the woman he has loved (Well spent time with) and lost over tiem, with support from Dina Rae an American R&B Singer who smoothly croons the chorus. It really relays for me the fact that Eminem can’t handle a relationship and its unclear whether his anger is with himself or the women he meets, overall, its a bit too diggy for my liking, the samples in the background are cool and the beats are upbeat but I couldn’t tell if Eminem is accepting responsibility for failed relationships or blaming others.

14. Hailie's Song

This song was never released as single but is one of the greatest in his career, talking about his love for his daughter and the world she is growing up in, Eminem touches on his long custody battle his ex-wife and his failings and strengths as a parent, the song is sung and rapped by Eminem and is utterly spell binding, it has heart, is sung with purpose and love and is the most beautiful song he has created in its purely directed love for his daughter.

15. Steve Berman (skit)

Another dig at the record company, featuring ‘Steve Berman’ a PR from Aftermath Records who generally appears on Eminem albums slagging the songs off, on this one he is filled with praise but before he gets to the crescendo of his soliloquy to this great album, Eminem shoots him.

16. When The Music Stops feat. D-12

This song has hidden meaning its about the life of a rapper and how you have to live the image off camera once you’ve built it up on camera, as one of D-12 was shot dead this has added significance, but it is interesting hearing intelligent lyrics about why people have this tough facade rather than simply using the usual hail of street talking about how hard life on the street is and how you have to be tough to survive, this looks at how life for a rapper isn’t perhaps so hard, but the image they create for themselves makes it harder as they become a target to others who believe everything they hear.

17. Say What You Say feat. Dr. Dre

Another Dre produced song, where Dre and his protégé Eminem let loose at everyone who has criticised them ,the meida, the government, other artists, get it as they rap with style and over a thumping bass beat. A good song but not one of the best on the album.

18. 'Till I Collapse feat. Nate Dogg

Eminem raps about envy in the music business while Nate Dogg puts his smooth grooves all over the chorus, this is a decent song but not one of the stronger ones on the album, despite Dr Dre’s touches.

19. My Dad's Gone Crazy feat. Hailie Jade

This is Eminems opportunity to settle some scores, like the grumpy old man of rap he talks about people he doesn’t like and gives them both barrels, while on the chorus his beloved daughter cutely comments that her Dad’s gone crazy, the contrast between his vitriol and his daughters clumsy charm is brilliant and while he was criticised for allowing his daughter on this track it does fit with the story of this album and the chaos surrounding the lives of Marshall Mathers and Haillie. A thumping, fun song which ends the album in a really fun way.

20. Curtains Close (skit)
In much the same way as the album started we hear Ken Kaniff wanders onto the stage with the heavy sound of his steps for the grand finale, he steps out and simply says "Without Me."

Summary

Apart from the skits which seem to be about point scoring and kicking out at his record company this is probably one of Em’s greatest albums, he gets to really let loose and talk intelligently about issues beyond the rap game.

This is angry, vitriolic and shows Eminem at his absolute best, I love the contrast of his love for his daughter and his disdain for almost everything else and think Sing for the Moment is a wonderfully eloquent rebuke to the middle American critics who laid the blame for high school murders squarely at the door of Eminem and other controversial musicians, he puts his points across brilliantly and this album is possibly his smartest and most listenable whilst also being his most relevant.

As an album this is one of the best in his entire collection, it is wildly varying from the Ho-Down music of Square Dance with its political attacks to Hailies Song where he sings beautifully about his love for his daughter. The album is angry and its almost a form of therapy as he talks about needing a break and seems to be getting all the anger out of his system.

Cleanin out my closet is awesome and in the same league as the thumping ‘Lose Yourself’ while there are about 12 songs on the album which deserve recognition. The skits are not particularly great, or funny or charming but the album itself is one of the best rap albums of the early part of this decade.

The album is available for 99p on Ebay or Amazon Market place and I would say that is one heck of a bargain.
