Advantages: High quality, original Disadvantages: Change of direction will alienate some
I?ve only been a fan of BT (Brian Transeau) since his third album, ?Movement In Still Life?, but in that time I?ve held him in very high regard, and collected not just his previous albums but some old singles and remixes too. He?s best known for trance anthems such as ?Flaming June? and ?Remember? (both from his sophomore LP ?ESCM?), but by MiSL this sound had diversified to include breakbeat, hip-hop and drum and bass. I seriously can?t recommend that album enough.
The arrival of his fourth album, however, caught me off guard. It was only by chance I saw ?EmotionalTechnology? on Amazon, imported from Canada at a price of £15.99. I waited a while, but there was no sign of a UK release - not even mentioned on www.btmusic.com. Again, quite by chance, though I saw it on cd-wow just prior to Christmas at £8.99 including a disc of bonus ...
Advantages: Light years ahead of his rivals Disadvantages: The build up at the album's outset
Ah, BT. It has been a voyage, hasn't it? Every so many years another one pops up from nowhere and my life is changed yet again. It's testament to such a talent that there's never any hype, you never know it's coming, and yet his music elicits such passion. I accidentally happened upon EmotionalTechnology, thinking Yes, it's about time, isn't it? and then could find it in only one store in the whole of Leeds. And as you hand over your money - instantly and with real anticipation - it makes you feel like part of a club, doesn't it?
His albums have matured over time, and in the vein of artists like Massive, each album has pushed the frontiers that little bit further back. 'Movement In Still Life' was a fantastic album with real staying power and tunes beautifully crafted to stretch your eyeballs to the limit, but I ultimately found ...
Advantages: Lots of big tunes Disadvantages: A couple of average tunes
?Emotions? dropped in 1991 as the second alum from the Pop and R&B singer Mariah Carey. It was seen to receive less promotion than her first effort (which came a year earlier) but sees that she was able to come up with singles that had the potential to be taken out-of-context and still do big things (as the titular track, in particular, was able to do) with more danceable elements added to the mix with the dominance of ballads the first time around.
1. ?Emotions?
She kick off the album with a freaky little dance cut that immediately livens up the atmosphere . You find that with it she is able to effectively bring together her strengths in the R&B field to the more conventional Pop material for a tune that does it all. In addition to this her broad range of vocals (particularly at the high end) is made to be a main driving force ...
