Now I am not a great fan of Eminem however I bought this cd when I first heard 'Mosh', track 8, I'll expand on this later. I then heard all this stuff about Eminem retiring, this was his last album etc., etc. I am a fan of Dr Dre however, and as he produced the album that helped to persuade me.
So it was with a critical ear that I first listened to it. The fact I still have it four years after it's release is testament to the fact I like it, otherwise it would have been boot sale bound by now.
The booklet inside has all the lyrics, I like that; and lots of 'set up' photo's, bit too much gun imagery for me but there you go, this is his style.
The tracks:
1. (Curtains Up - Encore version) No needed, just a soundclip of the audience waiting for him. 0/10 not a good start however....
2. Evil Deeds Brilliant opener. An insight into his mind without a doubt. A really good thumping bass with a 'clicky' percussion whilst he raps over this with some backing going into nursery rhyme. A very complex musical piece with Em rapping about his childhood and a fair level of insight into his current 'issues'. he also parodies his wealth, very good, a definite 9/10.
3. Never Enough 50 Cent and Naate Dogg are on this track too. Not a great verse structure, yet the chorus is bloomin excellent. The rapping moves into the 'whiney' nasal rap that he does sometimes. The chorus though, gerat. 8/10.
4. Yellow Brick Road I love the start of this with a 60's docu voice over. This is Eminems answer to the accusations of his 'racism' when he was a teacher. A real commentary of how and where he grew up. It feels like a real opening up, it feels from the heart and it is a real apology for past behaviour, you gotta give him credit for that. 8/10.
5. Like Toy Soldiers Brilliant, a rousing militaristic drum beat, kids choir singing the intro and then a strong rap from Em, not quite as 'whiney' as usual. Basically he is rapping about having had enough of the whole gangster 'beef' thing where rappers are dissing each other and it ending up in violence. Again credit for that. Plus I have to say the idea of using military drums with a very good musical harmony and a kids choir, it is actually pretty close to genius. 9/10.
6. Mosh Again, a use of kids, pledging allegiance, then the sound of aircraft and gunfire. An angry Em then completely slates GW Bush and the Iraq war. This was at a time when the war was very patriotic and Em had cd's smashed and posters burnt. very brave and controversial. Not only that, this will be seen (I am sure) as a classic protest, ant-war song. The sound effects are used with such insight, against a backing track which is menacing and dark. This really is a masterpiece. 10/10.
7. Puke Oh dear, another crap rant against Kim, his ex wife, with the sound effects of him vomiting, why spoil the album after such a powerful song before? 0/10.
8. My 1st Single Interesting song this. A quite mad use of some percussion that is, well, I don't know what. This is lazy, but fast, laconic rapping, he does not seem to take a breath for ages. There is acatchy chorus which he spoils with belches and mysoginistic lyrics. Bizzarre and interesting. 5/10.
9. Paul (skit) This seems to be something he does in every album, chats with his lawyer or producer, or editor on the phone, boring! 0/10.
10. Rain Man This is just plain weird, and quite fun and irreverant. He is basically slagging off the censors and his detractors. He then raps totally innappropriately about Superman, and this goes into a Christopher Reeve rant which I have to say is quite offensive. Then he goes on about gay sex....then I get it, he is deliberately provoking the moral majority. What some would call post modern irony. I should not like this, it is so offensive, and yet I do. 7/10.
11. Big Weenie This is a great anti bullying song, I have used it work with young people (including my son) that have been bullied. Really very good, surprisingly so. Lots of swear words yet, it seems appropriate for a change. He uses 'Big Weenie' interchangibly with 'Big Meanie'. 9/10.
12. Em Calls Paul (skit) Not again!
13. Just Lose It This is much more like a D12 tune (his other venture). This was an anti Michael Jackson song, blatantly rapping about his 'alleged' child abuse. MJ tried to sue, it never worked. the video had a MJ lookalike losing his false nose on the dance floor, irreverant and funny. Just for the subject matter I like this. 8/10.
14. Ass Like That A big hit, lot's of Middle Eastern backing music. About as 'pop' as he gets, I cannot stand this, especially his false Arabic accent, terrible. 0/10.
15. Spend Some Time With Obie Trice and 50 Cent. I just don't get this, too 'gangsta' for Eminem and really quite boring. 2/10.
16. Mockingbird I love this, a song to his daughter in a 'manly' way. Actually quite heartfelt. Really powerful yet unintrusive backing harmony that really suits his lament. Very self indulgent and that is actually quite brave. Each chorus is very nursery rhyme like. the ending is extremely scary and gives us an insight into how Eminen thinks. Very good and powerful. 8/10.
17. Crazy In Love Hate this, he tries to mix a bit of 70's rock and funk, then it just goes into a horrid rant to Kim again. He should get some help for his views towards women sometimes! 0/10.
18. One Shot 2 Shot Very 'Gangsta' again, and this one is quite a good one, quite racey with a intrusive and urgent back beat. I like this. 9/10.
19. Final Thought (skit) 0/10. I'm not even gonna bother.
20. Encore Dre and 50 are on this track and it is almost celebratory. Okay, but not exactly a classic. 5/10.
~~~~~~Finally~~~~~~ There is no doubt that Eminem has 'issues' particularly with women, and some would say with his own racial identity. There is also no doubt that he is a very talented song writer, rapper and performer. This album has it's share of crap like 'ass like that', then there are very grown up and brave offerings like Toy Soldiers and Mosh. I'm still impressed and 20 tracks (23 on the 'deluxe' album) for £7.99 on iTunes seems like a bargain to me.
...from Eminem.
The title Encore suggests that it is the final act and various lyrics suggest he is tired of the fame now and has enough to live the rest of his life comfortably.
Sad for us, but good luck to him and what a great way to leave us!
Advantages: Great production, a few good songs, Disadvantages: Nonsensical and stupid for the most part, he isn't even bothering
After the excellent Eminem Show once again reinforced in my opinion that not only is Eminem the best rapper but is extremely consistent. Therefore to say I was looking forward to this album would be a huge understatement. It would be nothing less than truly brilliant because after all it's Eminem. Those perceptions were only strengthened with the leaking Of We As Americans a terrific song in it's own right but sadly not present on the album. The ... ...which means that we get a lot of Dr Dre production as well as Eminem's own production talents. Thankfully the production is absolutely nop notch, delivering bouncy, multi layered synthand keyboard driven beats , to dark multi layered beats, all of which create the right atmosphere or at least should do. This has always been something which the production team as a whole have always executed brilliantly and it's a very rare event when the production ...
Advantages: Mockingbird, The Bonus Disc is tight Disadvantages: Em's awful singing and rhyming; Repetitive "Shady" Production and Subject Matter; Juvenile and Immature
...It seems like 2004's Encore didn't come as a surprise. It's whack, yes, but not in the same sense that I thought it would be. I previously thought that Eminem would nail us with club song after club song, and preach how he's a "gangsta" like he's done on his spots throughout the year. Instead, Eminem has decided to go with the formula that has always worked. Unfortunately this time around, it doesn't work. Besides Eminem's decline in creative lyricism, ... ...released 2 years back. Perhaps Encore could be considered 2 years late, because crude jokes about Michael Jackson and Christopher Reeves are definitely passe... and unfunny. So on Encore, we find an emcee who is far and beyond his artistic roots, hitting us with the same bullshit we've heard from him over and over. Toppled with simplistic, boring lyrics and brain-scraping production, make sure you bring a barf-bag for this one... Track List & Rating ...
Advantages: Mature performance commands respect and interest Disadvantages: Uncharacteristic and dark
...that long held tradition, because Encore is less likely to offend (except perhaps if you're the President) and instead can be seen as an eye opening transformation from rap sensation to political activist. All the ingredients combined in the album are aimed at the huge gathering of fans Em has amassed and the CD provides the manifesto for his cult following. There are yet more lines of seemingly self obsessed frustration that threaten to water down ... ...There's nothing one dimensional about Encore either, the popular (and also catchy) "Ass Like That" might be a little harder to take seriously but is a very humorous and light hearted track played out in the rapper's distinctive un-politically correct trademark.
Be sure to look beyond the tracks that have made the airwaves, because to coin an old phrase, there's real strength in depth. By no means is Encore an innocent take on things; there's little ...
When's the next one EM. I cant Explain how much I love Eminems music, His Lyrical concept his pure genius, these are my opinions, I understand other people would rather kill Em that shake his hand.
I don't think this is marshal's best album, with a little mix between some of these tracks and some from the Eminem Show and you've got your self a bang in CD.
A little bit about the CD, It is Eminems newest released album with around 20 tracks, a couple of these tracks are skits, (as always) and they are as follows: Evil Deeds, Never Enough, Yellow Brick Road, Like Toy Soldiers ,Mosh, Puke, My 1st Single, Rain Man, Big Weenie, Em Calls Paul ,Just Lose It, Ass Like That, Spend Some Time, Mockingbird, Crazy In Love, One Shot 2 Shot, Final Thought, Encore. Advantages: Brilliant music, lyrics and drama in the videos Disadvantages: Lyrics are a little vulgar at times but only to express his feelings
What can I say about Marshall Mathers a.k.a Eminem, he is just one of the best rappers that has ever existed if you ask me. No one can even be compard to him if you ask him. Eminem has been my favourite singer cum rapper for most of my life, and I'm really crazy about his music. Eminem is one guy who loves to rap about his life. Everything about his life can be known, his songs are so meaningful and are so melodious that you just dwell into the song. The way he uses his intelligence for the lyrics and for the parts where he adds comedy is really commendable. His language may not be appropriate for some ages but they are only for expressing his feelings. Eminem has always been and will always be my most favourite rapper. If you havent heard him before I suggest you do and I'm sure you'll love him as well. ...
Advantages: Its Eminem's work! Disadvantages: He shoots people so he might go to jail :-(
This is a great CD with a some popular songs like : Like toy soldiers, Mosh, Just lose it, Ass like that, Mockingbird. There just some of the great songs on it. It isn't his best CD but its still fab! The song Mosh if you listen to it is quite policitcal. Thats probally my favourite song off the CD. This is a great buy and i suggest to everyone that likes him to buy this CD !!
This was the first Eminem CD i have bought but i have heard all his other CD's while round a mates house. Even though it has a lot of swearing in it the lyrics really say something that means something unlike some songs that get released these days ( eg Crazy frog i hate that song) ...
Album Notes
'Encore' is the fifth studio album from possibly one of the biggest selling US rap stars ever. Produced once again by Eminem's mentor Dr. Dre, the album sticks with Dre's signature hip hop beats and Eminem's witty and sometimes controversial lyrics. The anti George Bush single 'Mosh' is also included.
