Regans debut album, The End of History, its apparent that his is a talent not to be ignored. Recalling any number of folkish predecessors--Bob Dylan, Jose Gonzalez, Nick Drake--Regans finger-picked guitar work and warm, Damien Rice-esque vocals flow through this entire project like meandering, golden streams. Mixing winsome melodies with emotive chords and quasi-poetic lyricism, Regan straddles the classic folk sound of the 60s and the contemporary neo-folk scene with bristling aplomb. Unlike many so called new folk heroes though, Regan keeps his approach simple, varying his songs not with electronic beats or acidic guitar squalls but light embellishments such as brooding strings (see the dark, Gonzalez-esque "Hunter's Map") and subtle backing vocals (see "Black Water Child"). Though skeletal, Regans songs create a dreamy, nostalgic ambience that successfully eschew cliché. Intimate and contemporary, universal and classic, The End of History is a triumphant and highly accessible first outing. --Paul Sullivan

Fionn Regan has been around since 2004, the year which he released his first EP titled 'Hotel Room'. Despite this it is only untill recently which he is beginning to receive the recognistion for one of the most enchanting song writers and performers of the modern age. Fionn says his influences are Leadbelly, Howling Wolf, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground, The Pixies and Nirvana, Regan has drawn comparisons to Young, Woody Guthrie and John Lennon. Yet I believe it is Nick Drake's work which I can most confidently draw comparisons with that of Regan's.
For his debut album Regan has created a distinctively live sound using using analogue equipment and recording in houses, a shed and a barn to try and capture a live sound. His music has slowly began to enter the public sphere, most recently the first track on the alum 'Be Good or Be Gone' being used in the TV show 'Skins' on E4 as well as being used for a clip I saw on the BAFTAs.
'Be Good or Be Gone' is the first track on the album and it is not surprising why it has been used on television. Regan's live sound adds a touch of originality to the piece, and it is clear that like Nick Drake this is one man and his guitar, with the odd backing singing which I believe is Regan anyway. If you get a chance to what the video for this single then I recommend you do so. The video is not produced as you would expect a first single's video to be produced. The video consists of Regan and his guitar singing in various public places, his voice is completely untouched and is heart-warmingly beautiful. Definitely the strongest track on the album, this may be because it is the track which first capture me however the lyrics are uncanningly catchy and the melody is simply heavenly.
The Underwood Typewriter, Snowy Atlas Mountains, Put a Penny in the Slot, Abacus, Bunker or Basement are the other favourites of mine on this album. I feel that despite the originality of Regan, at times the album can become a little wearing however I do believe that the album ends on a high with 'Bunker of Basement' introducing a few piano parts and Regan's voice really does make this track hauntingly beautiful. My favourite part of the whole album is the instrumental towards the end of this track which lasts for 2-3 minutes where Regan does not sing and you can just truly enjoy the wonderful melody which is reminiscent of a movie ending.
As with most albums the album features a 'hidden track' at the end of the last song on the album. Normally I find hidden tracks ot be somewhat dissappointing and let the whole album down however I do not find this track to do such things. If anything I feel that the hidden track is possibly one of the strongest tracks on the album, I admit it is not as catchy as the first track on the album but I feel it's originality outdoes 'Be Good or Be Gone' on many levels.
This album is great for unwinding or listening to whilst working, however I use it most to calm myself down and whilst driving in the countryside. Regan's melodies and lyrics paint pictures and are truly beautiful to listen to. One of my favourite albums that I have ever owned - I just wish I had found it earlier.

Album Notes
The Irish singer songwriter Fionn Regan's debut album is a slow-burning collection of deeply personal songs that initially sound fragile but whose imagery has a steely, almost surgical precision. Armed with only a voice and acoustic guitar on most tracks, Regan creates an intimate world paradoxically open to all, with songs like "Put a Penny in the Slot" describing a love story's failing trajectory, and "Blackwater Child," which has a simple, subtly gorgeous arrangement, summoning shades of Nick Drake, Donovan, and the ancient songs of their countless anonymous forebears.
