Advantages: Sophisticated guitar music Disadvantages: Only 42 minutes. Occasionally lacking inspiration.
Longwave - not to be confused with the rather more hyped Longview - are not exactly a household name, and I find it puzzling why. It seems so many bands from the burgeoning New York scene have been forced down our throats over the last few years as ?the next Strokes?, yet The Strangest Things (the band?s second album, but first UK release) almost passed us by on its low key release back in February. By chance the accompanying single ?Everywhere You Turn? caught my ear and I made a note of the band?s name, but didn?t do much about it. I bought the album a month or two ago in Virgin for a bargain £4.99 (think it should?ve been £7.99, but if they?re going to mis-price their stock I won?t complain!) and all I can say is it?s one of my albums of 2003!
The style?s not the traditional garage rock we associate with the current New York cool ...
Advantages: Amazing artwork, brilliant storyline, and of course, Phoenix Disadvantages: You'd have to know a bit about the history of the X-Men to understand
Penciler: Greg Land
Inker: Matt Ryan
Colorist: Justin Ponsor
X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong is a Graphic Novel (Trade Paper Back) collecting all issues (1 to 5) of the mini-series with the same name.
Years ago, Jean Grey called upon a powerful cosmic being known as the Phoenix Force in a desperate attempt to save the X-Men from certain death. Assuming Jean's identity, the Phoenix decimated an entire planet before the X-Men could seemingly destroy this deadly cosmic entity. Yet like the firebird of legend, the Phoenix has risen from its ashes.
The Phoenix, having been attacked by Shi'Ar warriors, (an alien race, allies of the X-Men), has been splintered and driven insane. It finds its way to Earth where it seeks out the X-Men, or rather one in particular, Jean Grey. Upon reaching Earth, however, it finds that its former host is dead ...
Advantages: Long-range reception Disadvantages: Poor sound quality, Poor Music
5 years ago, I used to listen to this radio station non-stop as it played the highest quality music all day long. However now my opinion has changed. This station no longer plays the high quality it used too and with poor reception, the sound quality is pretty poor too. The music that is played is often outdated and basically rubbish which is not helped by the poor signal long-wave radio transmits. These days I do not listen to long-wave radio anymore. I feel this radio-station needs a few more top quality DJ's. ...
Longwave: Steve Schiltz (vocals, guitar); Shannon Ferguson (guitar); Dave Marchese (bass guitar); Jeremy Green (drums). Additional personnel: Genie Morrow (accordion).
Album Reviews
Uncut (3/03, p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The album is rich in nimble detail, shifty atmospherics and an aura of calm invincibility....The songs: memorably melodic, plaintive and bigger than skyscrapers..." Alternative Press (3/01, p.82) - 4 out of 5 - "...Solid pop songwriting, tasteful guitar-effect noise and enough hooks to mandate use of a 'repeat' button..."
