Advantages: classy and atmospheric Disadvantages: not for everyone
When "The English Patient" was first released in cinemas in 1997 I loved the film, without really appreciating the music. Then a couple of weeks later, I watched the Oscars ceremony, and every time the film claimed an award (nine of them, including Best Music) they played a little more of Gabriel Yared's wonderful score. I went to bed with the music playing in my head, and first thing the next day, went out and got the soundtrack. Since then, the ... ...two of wine.
"The English Patient" is set in North Africa and Italy during and before the Second World War, and the Ralph Fiennes character is a Hungarian emigré. The music reflects all these influences. The original music earned Gabriel Yared an Oscar, and the other music featured is classic stuff.

...got the soundtrack for The English Patient, I had no idea what the songs would be like. However, upon listening to each of the songs, I realized that none of the songs have words. Nearly all of the many songs are by Gabriel Yared - Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and there are also songs performed by Fred Astaire, Benny Goodman, Marta Sebestyen, Shepheard's Hotel Jazz Orchestra, Julie Steinberg, and Ella Fitzgerald.
