Album Notes: Thanks to an endorsement from Franz Ferdinand (and a little song called "A Girl Like You" by frontman Edwyn Collins), Scottish pop band Orange Juice gets all the name recognition, but within the world of taut, jangly, slightly funky art-rock, fellow Glaswegians Josef K are surely as important as their citrusy brethren. Josef K were never the easiest band to track down stateside, so Domino's 22-track ENTOMOLOGY is a more than welcome, if not outright essential, reissue. Consisting of the band's obscure early singles for famed Postcard Records, tracks from the band's two full-lengths, and a 1981 Peel Session, the collection isn't exactly definitive, but it's an excellent introduction to and portrait of an ignored band that, whether one notices or not, has its fingerprints all over the early 2000s' new New Wave.
Album Reviews: Mojo (p.128) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Heaven Sent' and 'The Missionary' are exceptional, propulsive punk funk, utterly unsurpassed."
Advantages: Not overlong at 10 tracks, gets better with each listen. Disadvantages: Opening track not the strongest.
...All the best records take a few listens (at least) to reveal their true nature. On first play this sounded like a typical 2nd album - longer tracks, less up-tempo. A month on this has to be my favourite CD of 2007. Nearly all the 10 tracks have resolved into fantastic, atmospheric (and not always gloomy!) tales of urban life and escape. Great tunes underpin the songs, with the now-trademark steepling guitar riffs standing out most in the choruses. Some not unwelcome echos of The Smiths are to be found in the lyrics, most obviously in the title track, but tracks like Weight of the World and Escape The Nest are really uplifting, the latter also containing the finest moments on the album with its soaring, thrilling chorus. What a live track that promises to be... Recommended!
Ok then, what about the digipak? Well if you like a glossy...

Advantages: A truly amazing insight into the world of James Lavelle Disadvantages: None whatsoever!
...The latest instalment in the dark soap-opera that is U.N.K.L.E., this is an amazing album full of depth and character. This genre defying album rocks up the U.N.K.L.E. sound with an exciting new collaboration between James Lavelle and Queens of the Stone Age. A moody concept lies behind the rib-shaking beats and dirty ryhthms in the form of James Lavelle pouring out his emotions lyrically about the recent split between himself and DJ Shadow. From the start to the finish of this album, the listener is drawn into a magical world of amazing musical production that capsulates the mind. This album is a must have amongst all alternative music fans and U.N.K.L.E. fans alike.
The limited edition CD also includes a second CD of the album without lyrics....

Advantages: Never go wrong on the club tunes Disadvantages: Ballards are weak
..."B2K" is the self-titled R&B album from a group consisting of members Omarion, J-Boog, Raz-B and Lil' Fizz. Their style is a blend of pop and R&B, and it marked the changes in the R&B genre at the turn of the century as all the male vocals groups had phased away and boy bands had just about done, they came through as a refreshing take on boybands, with a street appeal.
Although this was released in 2002, almost all of it was recorded the year before this as you hear them state the year in almost all the songs. If they had of recorded it in '02, then they would have had the busiest year of their life as they went on to release two LPs and an album in the year aswell.
1. "Got's To Be"
For an opener, I was quite dissapointed by this track, but it seems to grow on you with time, so don't be completly off-put from the whole album...
