Riding with the King - Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton and B.B. King first recorded together for one track on King's 1997 album ... more

Deuces Wild, an experience so satisfying that they
decided they'd better do it again. Before long,
Clapton announced on US television that one of his
remaining ambitions was to make an entire album
with King. Roping in producer Simon Climie, who
had been such an integral part of Clapton's hugely
successful Pilgrim album, the pair hunkered down
in Los Angeles and set to work rejuvenating and
re-interpreting a bunch of King's classics
including "Ten Long Years", "Three O'Clock Blues",
"Help The Poor" and "Days Of Old". They also take
on a bunch of other goodies including a slow,
bluesey reading of Sam & Dave's "Hold On I'm
Coming" and, appropriately enough, a witty take on
John Hiatt's "Riding With The King". They reach
back to 1946 for the Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen
standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and even dip
into the 1930s to resurrect Big Bill Broonzy's
"Keys To The Highway", where their trading of
tasty acoustic licks is a particular joy.
Throughout Riding With The King, Climie has kept
the production admirably simple, with King's voice
and guitar in one stereo channel while Clapton's
is in the other, helping create a vital intimacy,
as if they're playing across a small room to each
other. --Johnny Black

When legends collide

Advantages: Slick blues sound, sounds absolutely top notch. BEWARE! Geniuses at work!
Disadvantages: None. No - none at all.

...album:

- Riding With The King
The title track is a great track, and is definitely indicative of the quality to come. It's certainly light-hearted track, and sees to fit in with the cover of Clapton driving a Cadillac with King in the back seat laying back in the sun with Lucille, Clapton's Strat in the passenger seat. It generally seems to be a bit of an 'Ode to B.B.'. Superb guitar work (obviously) with Clapton's Strat going ...
...wonders as always. The hammond organ and piano sounds great, and while the song was written especially for the album, it fits in perfectly. B.B.'s section in the middle is great:

" I stepped out of Mississippi when I was ten years old,
With a suit cut sharp as a razor and a heart made of gold.
I had a guitar hanging just about waist high,
And I'm gonna play this thing until the day I die. "

BLUES AT ITS BEST

Advantages: Blues at its best
Disadvantages: Dated for young audience

Being an old blues buff my current lady bought me this CD as a present. It is a golden addition to my collection which has many titles by these maestros of melancholy guitar. There are many re-makes of classic blues numbers that either artist has recorded. The CD culminates with a rendering of Come rain or Come Shine which seems to cement the friendship of these old masters. Across each track Clapton shines with a white man guitar style that contains ...
...and his style is typical B.B.Blues. Both artists have voices that seem to have rounded with time, and mellowed with the years. If you are a fan this CD will give great pleasure. If you are new to the blues or either of these fine musicians, then you will hear what can be acheived by decades of practise, and a spot of genius. ...
