Enrique Iglesias released his new album, Escape, earlier this year. It’s a good album, but be warned, its not like his previous albums, with their Spanish sounds. Enrique is a fan of rock which is reflected in this album. This album has more of a guitar sound to it. But of course, it wouldn’t be Enrique without a good ballad, which is why the single ‘Hero’ is at home on the album.
So, let me take you through Mr. Iglesias latest offering
ESCAPE 3:28
“You can run, you can hide, but you can’t escape my love” A great pop song with a rocky feel and a good twangy electric guitar. This songs a winner as a single, as its catchy and enjoyable to sing along with. No boring bits in this song, and no cringe-worthy lyrics. A good chorus. There’s a few female vocals chucked in for variety.. Its no wonder this is the title track, although the album will be remembered most for ‘Hero’.
(I would like to point out that if I was Enrique’s laydee I’d find it extremely hard to want to escape his love!)
DON’T TURN OUT THE LIGHTS 3:47
Basically, this
song is about not wanting to turn out the lights when you are involved in a certain physical activity…Again, a great song. The albums really getting off to a strong start. However, this song is a little weird. No, not because of the lyrics! But because of the chorus, ‘ee a ee a eeh’. It sounds a bit Nelly-esque, but with Enrique singing it it’s a bit, er, odd.
LOVE TO SEE YOU CRY 4:07
Warning - Get a guarantee on your CD player as after hearing this track your ‘repeat’ button may become seriously knackered. As you may have guessed, this is by far my favourite song on the album. Its got a summery, Spanish feel, but is very ambient at the same time. It’s a brilliant song. Its Enrique all grown up. I’ll bet you he’ll release this as a single. If he doesn’t he’s mad. The lyrics are a little disturbing though – “the sweetest pleasure is pain, I don’t know why, but I love to see you cry” :>p
HERO 4:24
I’d be surprised if you’d never heard this. So you’ll all know it’s a slow, mushy ballad. Its nice, but after a while it loses its appeal. I would recommend this song if A)You are having a slushy moment with partner B) you have split up with partner, and want to actually feel worse or C) you have no partner and want one ! Enrique says this is the most honest song he’s ever written. Ahh bless.
I WILL SURVIVE 3:43 Hmm. I’m not sure about this. One thing I can say is it isn’t bland. Its very echo-y and there’s lots of string instruments and a bit of a tango incorporated into the track. But I must admit, I find the chorus really tacky. I have a tendency to skip this track. (Replace it with a repeat of ‘Love to see you cry.’) However, if you want a song to perk you up, inducing feelings of strength, this is the track for you. It’s a ‘I can get through this’ song.
LOVE FOR FUN 3:14
Ok, so this ones a bit cheesy too. This track often gets a bit of a slating, but I like it! It’s a happy, sing along track. Again, nice and summery. Be warned, its very catchy. Enjoy this song whilst cooking, cleaning etc as it really speeds you up and gets you moving.
MAYBE 3:14
This track is a ballad really , imposed onto a beat and guitar background. Its one of those songs that fits the atmosphere of a party that’s winding down, before you go home, without being depressing. Its about splitting up with someone, when deep down, you want to try again, and make a go of things
A fast paced, upbeat track, with a strong guitar sound. Its about a man spending the night with a woman, then realising that to her, it was just a one night stand. “I’m trying hard not to feel rejected, maybe her phone lines disconnected.” A fun song, which may also be released as a single in my opinion.
SHE BE THE ONE 3:36
This is a great song. It has depth to it, lots of instruments involved to create a ‘full’ sound. This song reminds me a little of Ricky Martin, but it suits Enrique’s voice to a tee. Like many of the songs on the album, you’ll want to sing along. You’ll want to turn this one up :>) Another single perhaps?
Before hearing this song, I presumed it would be a ballad. I was wrong, it is a love song though. Not the best track on the album. It would be a good ‘clothes shop’ track. Its ok, but best for in the background.
Escapar (escape) 3:28 No Apagues La Luz (don’t turn off the lights) 3:48 Heroe (Hero) 4:24
Spanish versions of the earlier tracks. These are good in there own right. Enrique sounds brilliant in his native language, as well as English. Thumbs up :>)
A remix of Hero. Jazzes it up a bit. The good thing with this is that it allows you to listen to a brilliant song without it being too slow or depressing. Phew, that was a long sentence.
So, I’d give this album 8/10 if you’re an Enrique fan or are after something summery. Even if you hate Enrique, I’m sure you’ll appreciate some of the tracks on the album.
‘Escape’ with ‘Hero’ Enrique, he’d ‘Love To see you cry’ but make sure you ‘Don’t Turn Off The Lights’
Thanks for reading,
