Album Notes: One of the most accessible figures in blues history, singer/guitarist Jimmy Reed soared to a remarkably high level of popularity, not because of any flashy style or unique approach, but because of his assured, straightforward take on the genre. This excellent three-disc set offers up 75 examples of the Missouri-born performer's appeal, culling tracks from his tenure on Vee-Jay Records from 1953 to '66. A prolific songwriter, Reed wrote most of the tunes on THE ESSENTIAL BOSS MAN, including much-covered hits such as "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," and the indelible "Bright Lights, Big City," which employs the harmony vocals of his wife, "Mama" Reed, to wonderful effect. Among the many other highlights of the compilation are "Take Out Some Insurance" and "Aw Shucks, Hush Your Mouth," both of which showcase Reed's amiable singing and no-frills guitar work. Though THE ESSENTIAL BOSS MAN may be a bit daunting to newcomers, it's easily one of the finest Reed collections on the market.
Album Reviews: Mojo (p.111) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[F]ans of the Big Boss Man should be placated by this definitive collection..."

For anyone only familiar with Lou Reed through Walk On The Wildside/Trainspotting/Perfect Day then this is the ideal intorduction to his back catalogue.
If you are a fan of Bowie it is an essential purchase - Reed is the darker twin of Bowie and their 70's careers owed alot to each other and their love/hate relationship.
This selection takes in everything from Velvet Underground songs...

The Masters Review ofMasters, The - Yardbirds (The)by
simoriah
Advantages: Hearing what then were the guitar legends of the future Disadvantages: None
...The band to start all bands...This album contains the best from the Yardbirds throughout time including tracks with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck when they were with the band. The songs which stand out are ultimately FOR YOUR LOVE, HEART FULL OF SOUL, EVIL HEARTED YOU, SHAPES OF THINGS, THE TRAIN KEPT A-ROLLIN', AIN'T GOT YOU AND SMOKESTACK LIGHTNING but loads more are included on this double album set. Many bands have been influenced by this British Premier R&B rock band yet they covered their fair share of great artists themselves. Blues legend tracks - John Lee Hooker's BOOM BOOM and JimmyReed's BABY WHATS WRONG are also included. This is a great way to hear what ultimately is the best of the Yardbirds....

Peel Back and See Review ofVelvet Underground And Nico, The/The Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground (The)/Nicoby
mikeydred
Advantages: Superb songs and sounds from seminal sixties band Disadvantages: May be too challenging for the more "genteel" ear
..." to the raw extreme noise terror of "The Black Angel's Death Song".
Every member of the band were essential, Nico's pronounced German accent contributing old world exoticism, Cale's searing Viola playing attacking the ears with no mercy in the repeated motif of "Venus in Furs", Reed's excellent songwriting and deadpan monotone vocals an excellent counterpoint to Nico, Sterling Morrison's guitar work filling out the spaces wher required all underpinned by the excellent drumming of Maureen Tucker.
Th album is full of stand out tracks, as well the afformentioned pieces we have the stunning drug song "Heroine", which starts off slowly before building up the another extreme noise crescendo, before starting again. Is this an aural representation of wjhat it does to you? I don't know but they definetly did.
"Waiting for The man" a slow rocker , again...
