There were so many good blues singer/guitar players during the 1920s and 30s that it's ... more
inevitable that many of them were overlooked by the recording companies. Others didn't record very often, and it is some of these that this fine CD collects together. Men like Tommy Johnson and Ishman Bracey are now almost lost to posterity and apart from the odd tracks here, they've gone from memory. Charlie Patton, Bukka White and Son House were a little better known and they are comparatively well represented here. Tommy McLennan was a splendid and rugged blues singer and "Bottle It Up And Go" also shows off his accomplished and full-toned guitar work. One or two of the better known singers are included and you'll find the seminal "Dust My Broom" from Robert Johnson, as well as Muddy Waters' 1941 "Country Blues"-- there's a case to be made for the opinion that Muddy was at his best in his earliest pre-electric days. Vivid imagery abounds in many of the lyrics with Tony Hollins's "Crawlin' King Snake" taking the biscuit. The recordings come from the period between 1928 and 1941. --Steve Voce

Advantages: The better tracks outweigh the average ones Disadvantages: Not many but some fillers
For what this cd is worth its good value for money, some little gems on this disc. Sometimes you buy soundtracks to find little known tracks that will never be released you can nod along to, Blue Streak has quite a few of these and i was well pleased with this purchase. Only seen the film once but rate the soundtrack higher
Girls Best Friend - Jay Z. A simple layed beat by Swizz Beats opens up the album with Jay Z hitting all the right notes, kind of. Single released with video, not his best but not a bad track
Criminal Mind - Tyrese & Heavy D. Good track, catchy chorus. A good up tempo follow up to the Jay Z track
Damn - So Plush & Ja Rule. Tune. Great track. Production by Darkchild hits the right spots, Ja Rule early raps leads you up the garden path and into a chorus filled with simple lyrics and sweet voices. Theres something ...
Advantages: Great Songs You Remember From Films Disadvantages: Dancing The 'Hot Stuff' From 'The Full Monty'!!
I am a huge music fan, I have been since I was old enough to listen and since that day, I have had a diverse music taste, I cannot pin point my favourite genre and I find music very uplifting & I especially love music in films.
So, did you, like me, love the music used in Uma Thurman & John Travolta's dancing scene in 'Pulp Fiction', did you feel Donna Summer's 'Hot Stuff' dancing scene in 'The Full Monty' was great, did you love the hustle soundtrack to 'Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels'? Are you a Film Four fan? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, I am certain you'd find something you like on this album.
Essential Soundtracks was released back in 1999, the second year of my A-levels and I bought this CD in Woolies for a mere £4.99 for a 40 track double CD, I purely bought this for the more trendy numbers from ...
Advantages: Good songs from good artists Disadvantages: Not exactly a love album
Unlike an album of just one artist, compliation albums are meant to capture the best songs of artists and put them together under one theme. This double album does it well if you go in for the slow, sensual side of R & B.
The first album kicks of with burn by Usher, a very good first choice. In fact, most of the first album reflects some very good artists like Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Justin Timberlake and R. Kelly each singing some of their best tracks. Each of the songs are unique in their own right but successfully do fit together well when listening to it as a full album. My only queries for this would be the ending track of Eamon '**** you right back'... Could be just me but this isn't very romantic :p
The second album is also good containing the infamous fugees 'ready or not', old school Bobby Brown 'two can play ...
