jazz trumpeter and vocalist's later years, when he had become a massively successful international entertainer. There is still plenty of superb trumpet playing, but no out-and-out swinging jazz instrumentals. Rather this fine sounding release concentrates on such polished songs as "Cabaret" and "Hello Dolly", which, as the interesting sleeve notes point out, knocked The Beatles off the top of the US charts in 1964, making Armstrong the oldest performer ever to have an American No.1 single. It was an achievement he would repeat with the British charts four years later. The song in question opens this album, "What A Wonderful World". Armstrong's trademark scat singing features on "Blueberry Hill", with a particularly fine voiced and extended trumpet solo coming to the fore on "La Vie En Rose". Throughout that gorgeous gravel voice brings to life classics such as "Georgia On My Mind", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" and "Dream A Little Dream Of Me". The only real drawback for collectors is the lack of dates and recording details, but this is still a fine selection of the incomparable Satchmo's most popular tunes.--Gary S. Dalkin
Album Notes: Recorded at several live dates in California in the 1960s, a period when Armstrong was experiencing something of a revival of his celebrity, the legendary trumpeter and singer and his band are heard in moments of pure exuberance, traversing the worlds of Dixieland ("When the Saints Go Marching In"), popular standards ("Indiana"), and cabaret ("Mack the Knife"), with effortless grace.

...We first approached St Louis at twilight and were immediately charmed by the unusual skylight dominated by The Gateway Arch which was bathed in a warm amber glow. We had driven down from Chicago along Route 66 and were pretty tired so we has little time or energy to explore ? St Louis would have to wait until daylight.
~~What?s in a name~~
First faux-pas of our trip! My pronunciation of St Louis was as in the title of the Judy Garland film and song. Wrong! A local born and bred in St Louis soon corrected me. The English pronunciation is lu-is. Lu-ee is the French pronunciation little used within the city.
St Louis is named after King Louis IX of France ? the only French king that was made into a saint. The city was founded by French explorers, Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette in 1673.
Saint Louis is often known as the Gateway City...
