Disadvantages: Unless a big fan of opera's or Puccini it does not really warrant sole purchase

...---OVERVIEW--- Having listened to classical music for a long time I had never been attracted to the Puccini CD's which I constantly knew were there in the stores. It wasn't until I saw the film Heavenly Creatures (a definite watch) that I discovered the true impact of Puccini's works. Using the Humming chorus from Madame Butterfly to powerful effect I was driven to buy a CD of his best works. --Puccini-- FULL NAME - Giacomo Puccini NATIONALITY - Italian BORN - 1858 DIED - 1924 MAJOR WORKS - Manon Lescaut, La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Turandot. ---PRICE--- At £5 a go, buying and getting hold of Puccini's music is no problem at all and is available in most high street music chains (HMV, Virgin etc) Again like many of my other classical CD's I recommend the NAXOS label for quality and price. ---MADAME... A genuinely 'essential' collection
Review of Essential Bruce Springsteen, The (Limited Edition) - Bruce Springsteen by  Essan

Advantages: Excellent selection of old songs and some new, rare material as well
Disadvantages: Fans will already have all the tracks on the first 2 CDs of the set

...Any 'Essential' album is going to be subject to some discussion on the song selection and there are certainly some inclusions which many fans will question when they're at the expense of some notable omissions - are Living Proof and Streets of Philadelphia really more essential than Backstreets? However, as an introduction this is probably as good an album as you could get with probably the best songs off each of Springsteen's studio albums up to and including 2003's The Rising. Also included, on the first 2 discs are 2 new tracks, both live versions (neither has ever had a studio recording) taken from the superb Live in New York City CD - 41 Shots and Land of Hope and Dream. The later is arguably the best thing Springsteen has produced in a long, long time - a soaring, epic, anthem... Read review

Review of Puccini: Il Tabarro by  MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Rich baritone performance, superb orchestration
Disadvantages: Dark and menacing

...Il Tabarro (The Cloak) is an opera in one act composed by Giacomo Puccini with libretto by Giuseppe Adami. The opera was composed in 1913 as the first of a trilogy of three separate and contrasting operas. The Trilogy (Il trittico) consisted of a thriller in Il tabarro, a sentimental tragedy in Suor Angelica, and a comedy in Gianni Schicchi. The operas can still be heard as the Trilogy or singularly as a self-contained opera. We recently went to see a live performance of the opera, Il Tabarro, at The Lowry and is our usual practice wanted to buy a CD. Fortunately, Salford Quays Outlet Stores is in close proximity (complete with music shop) enabling us to purchase this prized CD. To complete a review of an operatic CD, it is necessary to provide a musical synopsis. If you intend to watch the opera rather than listen to CD... Read review
