Everything Must Go was an album that gained the Manic Street Preachers a whole new generation of fans, after the much-mourned departure of guitarist Richey Edwards. With more accessible songs than their previous releases, but still possessing the edge that made the Manics heroes to so many fans in the first place - the ability to challenge conventions with their lyrics whilst still making catchy tunes - this album every bit deserves to be re-released.
I won't write at length about the songs on the "main" disc, as there are plenty of reviews of the original release for that, however the extras on this edition are worth the cover price and more. Alongside live tracks and demos of both released and un-released material, are some of the b-sides most loved amongst fans, in particular the spectacular Stealth Sonic Orchestra remix of A Design For Life. Other highlights include Horses Under Starlight - a beautiful instrumental, the controversial anti-monarchy track First Republic, and Sepia, a tribute to the greatly-missed Richey.
The DVD includes a 45-minute documentary on the making of the album, including rare TV performances and gives a great insight into the beginnings of the album, as well as the great impact it had on fans. There are also promo videos, performances from the now-legendary Nynex show, and films made by bass-player Nicky Wire's brother, poet Patrick Jones.
All in all, this is a must-have for fans of the band, even those who already posses the original album. It is also a wonderful piece of music history in itself, as the extra material sheds a new light on an album, which spawned an army of fans.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
As a music review you should write about the music in the album as well rather than leaving it to others after all a review should be your experience. A classic album indeed, can't wait until I have the money!
