This is the Manic Street Preachers’ fourth album and the songs that are showcased here are on the whole are magnificent and show the capability of a band not shackled by pretension and ambition. The opening track of ‘Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier’ is a great way to open up the album, with it’s sad cautionary tale of the title character. Most seem to harp on about the singles and admittedly they are very good but no-one has mentioned the minor gem that is ‘Unremovables’, a song that I just can’t stop playing. It’s excellent guitar intro followed by a subtly angry James Dean
Bradfield finds the band in very good territory. All the songs are genuinely unsettling
but my vote would go to ‘No Surface, All Feeling’ as being the most possibly gloomy. Compared with the latest album, this is the one that will be remembered for the ages.
