I started listening to Vertical Horizon when I saw the video for the title track from this album "Everything You Want" on television, and the music, vocals, and especially lyrics just blew me away. Well, soon enough I had my hands on a copy of the album and I have to say that it is one of the most lyrically inspired and musically flawless albums that I have heard, and ranks up there with Counting Crows' "August and Everything After" in my favourites.
The album opens with the rocky track "We Are", with an infectious and incredibly well sung harmonised chorus by both singers. Other upbeat highlights to get you singing include "You're A God" and "Send It Up". The main thing that I love about this album though are the sadder songs such as "Miracle", "Give You Back" and "Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)", all songs with some of the greatest lyrics I've heard, sung with such a heartfelt honesty that you can't help but be moved. I happened to get this album as I was going through a relationship break-up and these three songs especially meant a lot to me and helped me to get things out, something which i strive to find in a band's recordings.
Right from the beginning to the end the group doesn't set a foot wrong. Every song is a classic and will have you singing along with the two fantastic vocalists. The dual singing isn't explored as highly on this album as their earlier works, but it still works beautifully when used. These are a group of extremely talented men and I can't wait to hear more of them.
