1994 - After four long years you release the follow up to the debut mentioned above. How could any band follow up such a great album? Zak De La Rocha, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Timmy C set out to find a way...
This album is very different to their self-titled debut. The rapping and lyrics are greatly improved and their is far more variety in between the individual songs, this is the story of an ever changing band...
Track 1 - People Of The Sun:
The opener for this album, is 'People Of The Sun'. The rapping on this track is probably the best on any rage track, except maybe 'Sleep Now In The Fire'. This song is primarily about Mexico and their battle for freedom. It is an excellent album-opener and is typical rage in the way it is presented, with yet another excellent riff from Tom Morello.
Track 2 - Bulls On Parade
The main single to come from this album and a favourite of the band at live events. 'Bulls On Parade' is typical of teh band in that the song is about war and its effects and more importantly the killing of innocent families. This song is uptempo but still quite slow moving, this is yet another example of Zak's much improved rapping ability as well as his lyric-writing greatly improving, but for the most part this is a fairly average effort for such a band, however it does have a fantastic guitar solo.
Track 3 - Vietnow
This song is fantastic. It is about how during a war, peoples only rest from the fear is the propagandist-radio. This is another song with a fantastic Tom Morello riff (I've got to stop praising him!) and also excellent drumming from Brad Wilk. This is another up-tempo song and is yet another example of just how tight this and complimentary this band can be.
Track 4 - Revolver
After a while of listening, this has become my favourite track on this album. It is not as immediate as the three tracks before it is about the bad relationship between a mother and a father of a child, opening with the line ''His spit is worth more than her work'' and also containing ''Her body numbs as he approaches the door''. This song is yet another bouncy, 'Sleep Now In The Fire', type song, which has very calm verses and a very loud, brash chorus. Possibly the best part of the song is where it winds down at what appears to be the end, only to launch into another chorus, which is even more vicious and biting than any other I've heard before.
Hmm....seems like I've praised the first four tracks of this as much as I possibly could. So, you are currently asking yourself, how can an album have such a good review but get an average mark still? There is a simple answer, the rest is crap.
Dont get me wrong, it isn't all THAT bad, the next two tracks, 'Snakecharmer' and 'Tire Me' are both pretty good, its just that they are both very...well....average for such a special band.
However, this is normally where I stop this CD and remove it from my CD player. To be honest, I am a huge rage fan, yet none of the remaining 5 tracks interest me in the slightest. I'm not even going to bother reviewing them seperately...
Tracks 7-11: 'Down Rodeo' 'Without A Face' 'Wind Below' 'Roll Right' 'Year Of Tha Boomerage'
The reviews for these are interchangable so I will do it as one... This track is very boring, dull and monotomous. The band seem to have just...run out of ideas, even though they had 4 years to make this album. The lyrics just aren't special enough. This is just a real let down.
Overall, the first 4 tracks of this are truely amazing, the rest ...are not.
Advantages: Heavier than their other albums, if you like that sort of thing Disadvantages: Heavier than their other albums, if you don't like that sort of thing
1996 saw the long awaited release of Rage Against the Machine's second album 'Evil Empire', a much darker and heavier album than their self titled debut. In league with their political stand point the title is in reference to the name given to the former Soviet Union by Ronald Regan and other conservatives. Although the album was produced 12 years ago it is interesting to note the same political concerns are still prevelant. Featuring less innovation ... ...the vocals. The line up remained the same with legendary guitarist Tom Morello, vocals by Zach de la Rocha, drummer Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford on bass. The album was produced by the band themselves.

Advantages: Brilliant songs! nuff said Disadvantages: Not well known. :(
Evil Empire is simply a brilliant album. After buying it I listened to it for a week straight. I can not uderstand why it is not more popular. So many people havent even heard of it, but they are missing out.
The album finishes brilliantly with 'year of tha boomerang' which is a great song. The stark reality of life is expressed as tuneful, yet heavy in parts melody.
'People of the sun' shows the bands ability to rock hard, and was a classic single ... ...Against the Machine activist lyrics. The whole album is different to the common sound known to belong to Rage Against the Machine, but is still great. It is a hidden album, forgotten by most people. But true music lovers will find it a brilliant addition to their CD collection. I wish more people knew about it!!! ...

Advantages: Still a damn good album. BUY IT Disadvantages: Marginally their least brilliant album to date
The second album released by Rage in 1996. My personal feeling is that it is their worst album to date, or should I say their least best album to date, as this is by no means poor album in any way.
I would say that ‘Evil Empire’ is my least favourite Rage album, possibly because the other two are so good, meaning that I expect so much from the band.
One aspect of this album which I think is very recognisable is that is has a stronger rock vibe ... ...the first album. This is very recognisable in such tracks as the heavier ‘Tire Me’ and the melodic ‘Snakecharmer’. By no means do I think this a bad thing, as it shows a slightly different style to Rage, while still retaining their very distinctive vibe.
Overall I would say that this is a brilliant album, which is well worth buying (as with all the Rage albums). Just because I say it is my least favourite Rage album, shouldn’t put you off buying ...

These two albums are, without a doubt, my favourite RageAgainst The Machine albums. They are loud, explicit, violent and they just make you want to throw your head around.
I generally think lyrics are a very important piece of a song, but with RageAgainst The Machine, it matters less. Most, if not all, of their songs are about US ...
Advantages: The guitars and drums sound amazing Disadvantages: The vocals in places
Well to take a bit of a break from Shed Seven and Runrig I decided to pull something a bit heavier out of my collection after seeing Audioslave on MTV2. No not the Audioslave album but an album by RageAgainst the Machine who no make up 3/4 of Audioslave. This album was released back in 1996 and is considered to be their poorest album.
The band were an American 4 piece who started out playing in some ones front room in Orange County, California. A good number of RATM (from here on) songs are political protest songs but that shouldn?t put you off as they are quite good as well. As I mentioned 3/4 of Rage are now in Audioslave, after Zack left a couple of years ago to pursue a solo career and has hardly been heard of since.

Advantages: Innovative guitar use and thought prevoking lyrics Disadvantages: Relentlessly heavy
In the early 90s innovative guitarist Tom Morello left his band 'Lock Up' and went in search of members for new band. After seeing rapper Zach de la Rocha playing a club he also enlisted drummer Brad Wilk and childhood friend Tim Commerford on bass. Calling themselves 'Inside Out' they put together they put together some demo tracks that would later evolve into the self-titled 'RageAgainst the Machine'. This album also features Stephen Perkins on percussion and some guest vocals from Maynard James Keenan (Tool and Perfect Circle) for 'Know your Enemy'.
Released in 1992 their first album is renowned for it's high production values (some audiophile sites use tracks, in particular, 'Take the Power Back' to test speakers and amplifiers), original guitar techniques and it's hard line stance on political issues (covering social justice ...

Album Notes
Rage Against The Machine: Zack De La Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Tim Bob (bass); Brad Wilk (drums). Recorded at Cole Rehearsal Studios, Hollywood, California. "Tire Me" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Bulls On Parade" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. "People Of The Sun" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. This long-awaited sophomore release from Rage Against The Machine does not disappoint. Its grinding, ferocious guitar twists Public Enemy-like riffs in and out of the rhythm section's metallic pummeling. But as usual, while Tom Morello's guitar sets the pace, Zach De La Rocha's lyrical attack steals the show. It is, after all, the EVIL EMPIRE they're raging against. De La Rocha goes for the jugular with barbed lyircs, claiming in "Bulls On Parade" that "this microphone explodes, shattering the molds" in a world where "people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since their grandparents bought one." The group's rap-like rhythmic savvy and hard-rock edge bring them to a new plane. In "Snake Charmer," De La Rocha speaks of "greed" with a delirious excitement. Evidently, Rage Against The Machine will continue to rebel against the EVIL EMPIRE.
