Calling your band Pickled Dick is probably to some people, the equivalent of hanging a blanket-covered child over a balcony; attention grabbing but for all the wrong reasons. However, band name aside (I think it's legendary), Pickled Dick are one of the better underground UK pop punk bands emerging at the moment. Think a cross between pre-Nimrod Green Day, Screeching Weasel, Mr. T Experience and a little bit of The Queers, but with a stronger emphasis on harmonies and catchy choruses. Building on their debut full length 'Panda-Moanium', this six track gives the listener more of what can be found on the first release whilst at the same time expanding their sound and giving room for creativity.

The harmonies and sing-along's are still here throughout the 20 minutes, most evident in the insanely infectious opening track 'Extra-Terrestrial' and the "ba da daa daa wooaah"-filled 'Shoot!', both of which will be drilled into your head within two listens! The speed from Panda-Moanium has luckily not been sacrificed as 'Schizophonic Tornado' is true to its name, racing past quicker than a fat kid to cake and we get some punchy group shouts in the 2 minute blast 'Big Mistake'. The closing track 'B-Side U' is a good way to round things off, reinforcing the fact that this band can write a memorable tune, complete with melody, hooks and a perfect chorus.

However, 'Wet Blanket' is the biggest surprise with its use of synthesisers (thankfully they manage to limit its use so it doesn't get cheesy) which will do nothing but make you feel happy, even if the lyrics aren't overly cheerful ("when I'm older / will I still be a stupid little kid? / when I'm older / will I be innocent?).

Lyrically, this CD won't win any awards but then again, it doesn't really need to. They're simple but they fit with the style of music. Songs about girls and hard times are the main bulk, contrasting nicely with the uplifting and positive sounds of the 3 chord pop punk style.

Overall, the six tracks on this EP are a good representation of Pickled Dick's sound and they have easily injected some life in the UK underground scene. The production is spot on with everything sounding clear and to top it off, the artwork is great! Judging from this bunch of songs, the next release will be brilliant. Exercise Your Demons is easily recommended!
