This was one of my first rap albums, but since I have bought many more. After hearing the track "Gimme Some More" on a music channel I decided I wanted to hear more from Busta Rhymes and so purchased the album "Extinction Level Event".
The first track "Intro - There's Only One Year Left" sets the scene for the rest of the album, or the dark parts of it. A role play between a child and an elder describes an apocalypic future for our planet. The gradual deepending of the voice as the prophecy is described makes for eerie listening and I was glad when the first proper track came on. The album was released in 1998, before rappers were truely attracted to change their genre to comply with a more mainstream demand.
Having spoken about the dark side of the album, I must point out that not all the tracks have such a gloomy basis. Tracks such as "Gimme Some More" and "What's It Gonna Be? ft. Janet Jackson" offer something different. I particlarly like the JJackson track and feel the two artists compliment each other well. Most notable is the speed of Busta's lyrics in "Gimme Some More" and the following track "Iz They Wildin Wit Us & Gettin Rowdy Wit Us? ft. Mystikal" Both tracks remind the listener of how talented an artist Busta is and of course remind us of his talent for fast rapping. As for the track "Extinction Level Event", well this is a strange one, a musical beat and strange "la la" backing is mixed with some hard rap lyrics about the predicted apocalypse. Its a strange track but worth a listen.
My favorite track is "Do The Bus A Bus". A strong bass beat is accompanied by strong lyrics. Following this track is another dialogue between an elder and some child campers. The elder is savaged by a bear after refusing to play Busta Rhymes as the children request in this short role play. You can hear him being savaged and I would not advise those that take offense easily to listen to this particular part of the album Worth a note is track 18,"this means war ft. Ozzy Osbourne"- at times in sounds like black sabbath vs a wrestling theme tune!
The tracklistings and producers for this album are as follows: . Intro: There's Only One Year Left!!! 2. Everybody Rise (Camon/Lamb/Smith) 3. Where We Are About to Take It (Lamb/Sloan/Smith) 4. Extinction Level Event (Lamb/Leander/Seago/Sloan/Smith) 5. Tear da Roof Off (Dean/Smith) 6. Against All Odds (Fisher/Jamal/Jones/Lewis/McNair/Notise/Smith) 7. Just Give It to Me Raw (Dean/Smith) 8. Do It to Death (Smith/Stinson) 9. Keepin' It Tight (Colon/Dibango/Smith/Smith) 10. Gimme Some More (Smith/Spivey) 11. Iz They Wildin Wit Us & Gettin Rowdy Wit Us (Allamby/Dickerson/Mystikal/Smith) 12. Party Is Goin' on over Here (Smith/Spivey) 13. Do the Bus a Bus (Simmons/Smith/Smith/Spicer/Spivey) 14. Take It Off (Browder/Darrel/Evens/Smith) 15. What's It Gonna Be (w/ Janet Jackson(Allamby/Roberson/Smith) 16. Hot SH** Makin' Ya Bounce (Angellettie/Brian/Mitchel/Myrick/Randel/Smith) 17. What the F*** You Want!! (Kirkland/Lordan/Smith) 18. This Means War!! (Anderson/Geezer Butler/Conoscenti/Tommy Iommi/McLeer/Meyer/Osbourne/Smith/Bill Ward) 19. Outro: The Burial Song (Smith/Spivey)
A quick note on the inlay. The cover is of a spectacular fire ball, across a city scene. Inside are the tracks with prodcuers and engineers that helped produce them. There is also a thankyou page and pages listing some of FlipModes Fashion and Designs.
Overall I would sy this album is not as strong as "The Genesis", one of Busta's later albums but it is still a good listen for fans of Busta Rhymes. If you are looking for un-offensive main stream rap then I'd steer clear. This album warrants its parental advisory certificate. I would pay about 10 pounds for this album, but you may be able to pick it up cheaper as its been around for a while now.

The full title of this album, EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT, gives one a good idea of the themes contained herein. The album kicks off with a spoken word piece setting a scene of apocalypse and the end of civilization as we know it. This rather fatalistic prediction is given life on the title tune, but many of the songs here are concerned with less weighty topics. Janet Jackson guests on the propulsive, sexy "What's It Gonna Be," a tune with more carnal concerns. Ozzy Osbourne even turns up for the rallying battle cry of "This Means War!," which is based around Black Sabbath's classic "Iron Man." As always, Busta knocks out some impressively tongue-twisting rhymes over unpredictable, off-kilter beats, in his patented, unrelenting style. Both fearsome and fun, E.L.E. is prime Busta.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (1/21/99, pp.72-72) - 3 1/2 (out of 5) "... Hard, gut-punching beats anchor the disc. Electro bleeps, computer-game effects, a harpsichord, Asian-music flourishes, thick and funky bass lines, and string-laded samples from old movies are sparingly, precisely doled out on top..." The Source (3/99, p.212) - "...EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT is the product of an artist who has mastered his medium and taken us a little closer to a new reality..." Vibe (2/99, p.135) - "...With full control of his artistic devices and inspired by the acclaim garnered for his explosive lyrics...Busta landed feet first into the cameo king slot....Busta's latest...relies on the promise that Earth will soon shatter to bloody bits..." Entertainment Weekly (1/15/99, p.62) - "Rhymes continues to be the Jackie Chan of hip-hop, karate-chopping up mountains of rhymes with a maniacal fervor (and a charming, cartoonish persona). He may be one of the few rappers who can make tall tales of sex and success seem funny..." - Rating: B Urban Latino (2/99, p.81) - 4 out of 4 - "...impressively tongue-twisting rhymes over unpredictable but body-grabbing beats....fearsome and off the hook, E.L.E. is Busta Rhymes at his best." Mixmag (1/99, p.115) - 4 out of 5 - "...Busta, rasping like only he can, takes beats which owe much to the cut-ups of jungle and layers them with the rhymes which walk on the dark side..."
