When Amy Lee and Ben Moody met at summer camp in the States in 2000, little were we to know just what en effect they would have on the music world. The connection, however instant, was one that would gel and produce one of the finest rock albums of the new millennium, with the backing of one of the best independent record labels around. After the duo had decided to team up and at least write some material together, record labels came sniffing in hope of discovering the next big thing in this vast world known as modern rock. With an endless number of bands treading the very same path, Amy and Ben always planned to be different, with Moody’s undoubted talent and Lee’s truly stunning voice - they were destined for very big things. Already, only a year into their mainstream career, the band find themselves compared to European bands such as Lacuna Coil and Nightwish - something that is irrelevant in terms of popularity and chart success, largely in fact that Evanescence far excel in those departments. Amy’s gothic influences were always to play a big part in the birth of Evanescence, with a dress sense to match, she became the style icon for the mislead generation, giving hope to the needy and an outcry through the bands music. Wind Up Records, the lucky label that managed to secure the duos signature, gave them a mere two years to travel to Los Angeles and constantly write, in hopes of turning up enough sufficient material to allow for a debut release - and in no time at all the material was ready, the recording finished and the album pressed for release.
~~~~~~~~~~
The undoubted success of debut single ‘Bring Me To Life’ was just the platform the band needed to continue on their path to world domination - eclipsing sales of virtually every other single in its four week stay at number one in the UK singles charts - an amazing feat for a new rock band. With relative success through an assortment of movie soundtrack discs, most notably the appearance of ‘Bring Me To Life’ and ‘My Immortal’ on the Daredevil soundtrack, the band had already managed to reach such a wide audience in such a short space of time - this all coming prior to the release of their first full length album. When the album did come, the expectation was at such a peak that it instantly hit number one in worldwide album charts, and within 3 weeks had sold a million copies - again, unheralded for a band of their kind. Lee has been quoted in numerous interviews as saying that the duo preferred to write alone, before joining their ideas and formulising the overall sound to produce a final result - obviously a more than successful ploy. Lyrically the band don’t tread the tracks of so many others - instead Amy prefers to relate her music to the slightly older generation and steer clear of the angst filled formula that occurs so frequently now-a-days. - and with Moody’s ability to pick a tune, she has more than enough scope to pull it off. Their reputation as one of the good guys of rock is more than justified, with the band preferring to be known for their on stage antics rather than those off of it.
~~~~~~~~~~
What ‘Bring Me To Life’ offered in terms of heavy, melodic rock, second single ‘Going Under’ copied on a grander scale. The riffs are harder, the lyrics darker and the sound (for some reason), less commercial. Despite not hitting the dizzy heights that its predecessor did, ‘Going Under’ still managed to get more people on their feet and recognise the brightest new band around - a band that were sweeping all others aside on both sides of the pond. The thing for any band around, is to not release a plethora of similar songs, and with that, the bands third release was to be undoubtedly one of the finest tracks of 2004 in general - My Immortal. As mentioned earlier, its appearance in the funeral scene in the Daredevil movie had already earnt the song a minor following, yet the song was eventually released amid a unhappy time in the bands history. With the band in the middle of a major European tour, Moody took it upon himself to simply walk out on Lee and the other members as he believed the band had become to mainstream for his liking. This reasoning was not given for a mere three months after, with Moody simply ignoring the pleas of his former bandmates to return, giving little explanation in return. The video for ‘My Immortal’, strangely enough, featured both Moody and Lee walking alone, as if separate entities, something that encapsulated the state the band found themselves in - two brilliant minds slowly parting. The first low point in a career of undoubted highs - yet Amy was not to let that destroy the band.
~~~~~~~~~~
The situation defined the success of ‘My Immortal’, selling well within the singles market and portraying the emotions of Lee, something that must have been at the forefront of her mind. With Ben moving on to collaborate with a endless list of other artist, namely co-writing Avril Lavigne’s ‘Nobody’s Home’, Amy remained strong and would not allow the band to flounder on one mans petty reasons. Fourth single ‘Everybody’s Fool’ encapsulated that anger and threw it in the proverbial face of Moody, as if to say “we can get by without you”, whilst being the final release to be taken from ‘Fallen’, it seemingly ended the glorious four year relationship between to undoubted talents, something that is not easily forgotten. Moody was eventually replaced by former Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo, providing an alternative edge to Moody’s smooth melodies, something that so far has proved a very wise decision. The fact is that Evanescence will never be as strong as they were at the peak of the Moody/Lee partnership, but anyone who writes Amy off, doesn’t know her very well. What ‘Fallen’ gives the listener is an urge to destroy something, an urge to love something and an urge to listen deep within the sound and understand the lyrics - a strength that not many bands can claim to have.
~~~~~~~~~~
The remainder of the album comprises of similar tracks to the four singles, comprising of a similar style with the same strong lyrics, backed by Lee’s more than amazing vocals - proving to be far more than simply “Linkin Park with a female singer”, a claim that always appeared ridiculous to me upon reading it. ‘Hello’ is one of the most beautiful ballads you will ever hear, going places ‘My Immortal’ could merely dream of, whilst ‘Taking Over Me’ and ‘My Last Breath’ are a couple of tracks that follow the copybook of ‘Everybody’s Fool’ in delivering hard rock with a melodic feel. I’m not one to criticise Moody for the option he took - rather it’s the way he ended it all that sickens me, but for who he is and what he did for the band, all I can say is thank you. Futures possibly undecided, but the one thing that is certain is that Amy Lee will come back stronger than ever and will be anything but ‘Fallen’.

This is an immense track and a great way to start off the album =]
Amy Lee really puts all her effort into this track you can clearly tell. The beat is simple but very effective and half way through there is an awesome little riff.

...death and voices, screaming and fallen angels. The gothic imagery tumbles over itself and the troubled though brilliant vocal harmonies blend with the lovely harmonised electric guitar. This is a voice that cuts through it all and makes you listen. Some of the deliberate discords Amy Lee chooses show a great talent as well as a mad-monk sense of the gothic. The mad monks are there too as the song closes with some Latin chanting as the strings whirl ... ...of the great musical techniques that by virtue of their edginess and dangerousness stand out as different and innovative end up being used in quite a lot of tracks with not dissimilar arrangements. The Evanescence sound is distinctive and moody with much proficiency and creativity at work. Whilst I wouldn’t wish to offer any criticism of a band so clever, and talented and who did a great job here by anyone’s estimation, the moments that struck me ...

Advantages: Some of the music is pretty good...I said: SOME! Disadvantages: Lacking depth, originality, strength...etc.
I haven't wrote a music opinion for a little time now, so what better than to come up with this little treasure? Hmm. I'm pretty sure everyone in this world have now heard of a band called Evanescence...one minute they were completly non-exsitent and the next? Well, I don't know, it was as if they had crashed onto this Earth without no-one knowing about it and went straight to Number 1 in the single AND album charts...what is this world coming to, ... ...around for a few years, hailing from Arkansas, USA. Even though this group is made out of 4/5 members the spotlight IS and ALWAYS will be on the main vocalist, Amy Lee. Lee is only 22...sometimes it will susprise you by what she is capable of doing with her talent at such an young age.
Anyway, enough talking about nothing, because what does it matter about the band history? They were born, they went to school, they probably got bullied, they learnt ...

...again, and once again I've fallen on my feet with this one too.
Evanescence - a little-known (in the UK) Pop/Punk/Rock band that were even lesser known until the movie DareDevil came out, then people started to hear Bring Me To Life and people were liking it too but still Evanescence are virtual unknowns in the UK, and it has to be said that I didn't know of them till I bought my girlfriend the DareDevil soundtrack as a pressie and then nicked a ... ...I'm sat here listening to Fallen - all on the strength of Bring Me To Life and My Immortal - and the albums tops.
If you want to know what to expect - well its going to be a hard one - but I'll give it my best shot - for Vocals think of a cross between Sarah Mclachlan and Beth Orton, just make it a little bit rockier and you've got it - music wise, well I've heard people comparing them to Linkin Park, but I'd say they're a bit softer than that (note ...

...pose tonight, which flavour is Fallen the debut album by Evanescence, a marketing coup or one of the talented few (told I didn’t do poetry). Does entering an opinion in this state of thought indicate some bias I hear you ask, well I like to think I’m a fair man and talent is something I appreciate so stick around and see what you think.
Background
Basically Amy Lee, the vocalist, and Ben Moody, lead guitar, met sometime back in the 90’s have been ... ...Pete Matthews, he referred them to Wind-Up Records who signed them. Recently they added John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray. Now a cynical man might say, ‘that’s a coincidence, makes them a bit more like a rock band now and a bit more marketable’, but I would say… well probably just that, I am cynical and crippled with jealousy after all.
The CD
The cover is a rather unusual picture of Amy, it’s a little distorted and effected, doesn’t look much ...

Advantages: A few big singles Disadvantages: Inconsistent
"Fallen" came out in 2004 as the debut album from the Alternative Metal band, Evanescene, who broke through with their massive single, "Bring Me To Life", and a series of others which followed. The group take on aspects of Nu-Metal as they incorporate subtle Hip Hop and Electronica in their work, and this is what attracted myself to their stuff.
1. "Going Under"
This was the second single from the group, and following on from "bring Me o life", thi one gets them taking their Metal side a stage further as they first time you come across them, this eelemt to them comes as a surpisse as it follows lots of soft piano work before breaking into Metal, whereas this one is just full on. It gets into Nu Metal at times with a subtle re-working of the "Impeach The President" break.

Advantages: brilliant songs and I love them to bits Disadvantages: sometimes really depressing
Recently, having been a little more down in the dumps (I know I know it's Christmas, but it seems to always be a little more depressing for me and I don't know why). So playing my CD player in the night and listening to Evanescence, I think deep into the lyrics and get taken away to my dreams with the meaning of the lyrics. A lot of people cannot stand this band, but these songs really help me when I need them most. Although they are classed as indie/rock, the songs feel more depressing Goth. Evanescence consists of Amy Lee on the vocals, and sometimes even the piano, John LeCompt and terry Balsamo on the guitars, Will Boyd on the Bass and Rocky Gray on the drums. They make a brilliant band, and Amy lee's voice is just amazing!

Evanescence: Amy Lee (vocals); Ben Moody (guitar, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Paul McCoy (vocals); David Hodges (piano, keyboards, programming); Francesco DiCosmo (bass); Josh Freese, Rocky Gray (drums); Zac Baird, Chris Johnson (programming). Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano runs, which come to the fore on the very Amos-like "Hello." The perfect balance of hard and soft is met on "Haunted" with its ambient nuance stoked by clattering beats and loops, crunching riffs, and the use of a children's choir. Goth-like in mood yet nu-metal in execution, FALLEN could very well have been where Amos' first group Y Kant Tori Read ended up had they not come along 15 years too soon.
