Evanescence are one of the bands in an obscure section of rock that action get media attention. This is unusual. The thing that definitely stood out to me on the album was Amy Lee's (vocalist) ability to use classic instruments to boost the originality. I will review this album, track-by-track.
**Going Under** This song is one of the heavier tracks of the album. The tempo of this track is generally slow but it is still good. Lee's vocals in this song are extremely angry making it sounds bitter but awesome at the same time.
**Bring me to Life** This song is the one that launched Evanescence into the limelight. It was a #1 in Britain for four weeks which surprised a lot of people because of their genre. This chart postition was definitely well deserved as it is a powerful song. Lee's vocals are assisted by Paul Mccoy as an extra in the chorus.
**Everybody's Fool** This song has a more mainstream feel to it than other songs on this album. The intro to the song deserves recognition. It starts as a fast paced guitar combination to a slower lament about a women who is seen differently in the media. Although the song slows after the intro the guitar riffs and vocals are still almost perfect.
**My Immortal** Without a doubt, My Immortal is the saddest song on the album. The normal version on the song has no insturments but a piano and Lee's voice. The vocals on this reach new levels. It proves that Lee is not only capable to sing heavy and bitter songs, she can also sing soft, lamenting songs. The band version of the song is a lot more heavy. Lee's voice is still soft and peaceful but the band are also featured with drums and guitars.
**Haunted** Although the song is still great the intro can deter you a little as it sounds a bit childish. The song is still as heavy as the the others and can sound eerie with Lee providing ghostly backing vocals as well as lead.
**Tourniquet** Tourniquet provides an awesome use of vocals and guitars. While most of the song is outstanding the violins at the end of the songs are a bit "watered down". They run for about a minute and are boring to listen to alone.
**Imaginary** This song could definitely be the most unusual of all of them. But this not a bad thing. Many additional instruments are used from the norm. The use of violins and the harpsichord placate a dream-like sense. Lee's vocals are also very dreamy.
**Taking Over Me** This song was probably the weakest one of the album. It sounds a bit generic and the music seems out of place in a few places. While it is still a decent song, I don't feel it lived up to the standard that I came to expect of Evanescence.
**Hello** One of the two softer songs on the album, Hello delivers emotion where the guitars have been taken out. It is a soft song and can give you goosebumps at the sheer sadness of it. It could rival My Immortal as the saddest song on the album.
**My Last Breath** The first time you hear this song your first impression is that it has the sweet qualities of My Immortal and Hello while still being quite heavy. Lee's vocals are powerful as always but they have reached a new level on this song.
**Whisper** The phrase "Save the best until last" is extremely fitting to this album. This is the last song on the album and it has more operatic qualities that the others have lacked. Usually you expect the last song on the album to be weak and a bit -half-hearted, but this album breaks all expectations. Without a doubt my favourite track on the album.
