Amy Studt… yet another young wannabe wanting to follow in Britney’s footsteps out of America. Yet upon second glance her music isn’t of the typical teenage pop genre that saw Britney and fellow American Christina rise to fame… oh no, there’s much more to Amy Studt than meets the eye.
Just a Little Girl – her first single, seemingly an immature melodious song, I feel it’s not one of her best, elements of rock at times especially within the chorus, concerned with the transition of being considered too young and too little. (2/5)
Misfit – her second single released in the UK, again elements of rock do spring up throughout, this song has a much more catchy rhythm, quite fast paced and very beguiling! Similar to the first song with the structure, starting off fairly quiet and then reaching a crescendo in the chorus, concerned with not fitting in and could teach us all a thing or two about how to act when we don’t fit in! (4/5)
Under the
Thumb – this is one of my favourite songs of the album, absolutely brilliant I think, again starting off fairly slow and soft then breaking out with a strong beat and much louder leading up to a (again) rock feeling chorus. The lyrics are superb, about “being taken for a ride,” by a member of the opposite sex, I’m sure it’s one we can all relate to! (5/5)
If Only – I feel this song isn’t one of the strongest, sung weakly and almost muffled at times, doesn’t really progress at all, quite mellow and possibly the most chilled out song on the album, really depends on your personal preference as to if you’ll like this one. (3/5)
Beautiful Lie – another brilliant song, quite a pessimistic sounding start to it, gradually getting louder and building up speed gives a great feel to it when you’re listening and singing along, really like it! (4/5)
Ladder in my Tights – a very catchy rhythm to the start with have you tapping your feet along, shows the true variety of Amy’s voice with a smooth quiet start and then getting louder and more passionate, constantly changing the style shows she really can adapt to all types of singing! About not fitting in, similar to Misfit, brilliant! (5/5)
Carry Me Away – again rather floaty and ballad like at the beginning, it does begin to pick up in speed but a little too quiet and soft for my liking, not really her usual style. (3/5)
Happy Now – starts off with a mysterious, hollow sound to it and takes quite a while to get into the actual song, very depressing to start with, slow and mellow. Towards the chorus it does quicken up slightly, quite an angry song at the same time as being fairly gloomy, does show off her voice fairly well though but stays slow throughout. (3/5)
Gonna Be Fine – another brilliant masterpiece, the lyrics are simply superb, “constantly finding ways to fill the empty space, but still it seems that nothing touches you anymore,” something we can all relate to after a break up. “Don’t be ashamed of who you are, don’t be afraid to stand your ground,” gives us all a message as to how to cope with life, a brilliant elevating track! (5/5) Superior Mind – again brilliant lyrics are expressed, a slow start then quickening up with the chorus, the rock theme is re-entered into this song at the chorus, quite a good one! (4/5)
Going out of my Mind – formatted as Amy leaving an ansafone message to a man, quite a personal song maybe, very simple format to it adds weight to the lyrics, again building up to a powerful chorus, and another one we can relate to! (4/5)
Seconds Away – beautiful melodic music at the beginning, slightly creepy feel to it almost, not one of her best. (2/5)
Testify – another brilliant song by Amy, shows off her voice to its best advantage throughout a range of different lyrics, sounds and speeds! (5/5)
Nobody – again a bit too vague and mellow really for my liking, still a good one to end with unlike most albums! (3/5)
The format of most of the songs, the slower, smoother start, building up to a louder, crescendo of a chorus is brilliant I think!
Value for money – defiantly good value for money, now it’s been out for a while you’ll find you can get it for £6-£8, worth a listen if you want something new and refreshing and like a bit of very light rock.
A refreshing and excellent debut album!

Review of False Smiles - Amy Studt
Advantages: Exceptional, unique and memorable. Amy writes all her own songs and plays her own instruments. Disadvantages: The lyrics are a bit self-pitying and pessimistic at times (but this didn't bother me!)
