Jme's first album " Famous?" is a more mainstream attempt from the self titled Boy Better Know CEO than his previous 4 mixtapes. Whilst still retaining a "grime" sound, JME covers subjects such as the alarming rate of gun and knife crime on "Punch In The Face" which takes a twist on many slang words with double meanings, a very interesting song indeed. JME is an artist who is renowned for his more intellectual lyrics and this shines through on his debut album. " 123 " and " Punch In The Face " are perfect examples of this. Other stand out tracks include " Sun, Sea And Sand" which is a summer time anthem where JME is describing a holiday in ayia napa. " Power " Is a concept song with JME using his imagination to write about having a power to clone anything available to him. Also " Serious" is a insightful song about the amount of fake lyrics mc's use and if everybody who " spat bars " about having a gun, then the current gun crime rates would be a lot worse.
The production on the album is very good, with such names as Wiley, Plastician, Maniac and JME himself. This album will set standards for grime album releases in terms of production.
All in all, " Famous? " is a good, but by no means great album. Most of the songs released on the album were already available in some sort before the album itself was released, making some tracks a bit repetitive on the first listen to the album. Also many lyrics have been used on freestyles by JME, which is also fairly annoying. Out of 10 I would give the album a 7. It is a very steady debut, but certaintly no match for Dizzie Rascal's " Boy In Da Corner " Or Wiley's " Treddin On Thin Ice ". The album will appeal to the more clean, mainstream grime fan rather than the hardcore fan, but still I would recommend it to buy.
Released on his own Boy Better Know record label, youthful grime prodigy and Roll Deep member JME's (real name Jamie Adenuga) debut album 'Famous' is a predictably taut and complex affair, but not devoid of humour. Telling tales of his lackadaisical lifestyle and his intention on true expression, 'Famous' is entertainment through minutiae and exhilaration through pop culture references. Having previously worked with such luminaries as Wiley and Skepta (Adenuga's brother), as well as support from Radio 1's Tim Westwood, JME's reputation precedes his music.
