Fleeing troubles at home, a sensitive American rebel finds himself caught up in the exciting world of underground drift racing in Tokyo. The third in the wildly popular FAST IN THE...
more...FURIOUS series--a hybrid of fast cars, hot teens, and fetishized technology--gets a new jolt of energy and style courtesy of young hotshot director Justin Lin, who won raves at Sundance in 2002 for his look at Asian-American teens in BETTER LUCK TOMORROW. Leading man in training Lucas Black stars as sensitive rebel Sean Boswell, who, despite hailing from the poor section of town, vamps up his used car to drag race against the best of them. After numerous racing challenges won--including one against his high school's popular, wealthy quarterback--Boswell gets in trouble with the law one too many times. To escape confinement to a juvenile detention center, Boswell's military father ships him all the way across the world, to that most futuristic, tech-savvy of cities, Tokyo. There, he meets his match in the powerful, cruel D.K. (Brian Tee), who is not only the car racing star of the Japanese underground, but also related to several dangerous Yakuzas (gangsters). Complicating matters is Sean's undeniable (and mutual) attraction to D.K.'s gorgeous girlfriend Neela (Nathalie Kelly). The racing style, he soon learns, is very different in this strange land--a practice known as "drifting" that is more elegant and virtuostic than American-style demolition. Yet if anyone can take on D.K. and his band of Yakuza yeomen, it's this racecar rebel. All the pieces of the action movie puzzle, including sexy stars, nonstop action, and heart-stopping thrills, combine with a stylish aesthetic and energetic soundtrack to make another fine addition to a fantastic franchise and director Lin is adept at rendering Tokyo a full-dimensional, culturally rich location, rather than a video game backdrop.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

Overveiw.

Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) has an obsession with fast cars and racing, and as a result of totalling his car in an illegal street race; he has landed himself the chance of facing a jury or a jail sentence. The only way that he can escape this is by going to Japan and living with his military based father in a small, low rent part of Tokyo. At school, he meets Twinkie (Bow Wow), a 'Military Brat', who takes him and introduces him to the underground word 'drift' racing events that take place around the city. He borrows a car off Han, a friend of the Yakuza connected D.K, or 'Drift King' and in a style of race he isn't familiar with, he totals the car. To repay his debt, he starts to work for Han and he quickly gets himself more involved, and noticed. As things start to kick off, things get out of control and Sean quickly finds himself racing for girls, his life and his reputation.

I rather liked watching this film, as since I first saw it I have watched this film again multiple times, not because it is totally amazing or anything, I just like fast cars and illegal racing :P

The quality of the acting I thought was superb, especially Bow Wow playing the part of 'Twinkie', as he seemed to blend into the scene as if he actually was in downtown Tokyo, street racing in some bizarre 'Hulk' themed Volkswagen.

Lucas Black I thought played the part very well but in some places his acting left much to be desired, as he seemed to be acting as if somebody was holding the script by the camera and he was reading off it.

The rest of the cast I thought did exceptionally well as they all made you feel as if they belonged there, and that the scene was real, and this realism is what made me like the film more, because in some films, this realism is lacking, making the films seem out of place and silly. I think that was what interested me about the film; the fact that it was like the cameramen just went to Tokyo and filmed some drift racing that they found.

The racing scenes in the film added the cherry on the top, as these were thoroughly enjoyable, and some of the best that I've seen. The stunts were all very well coordinated and there was only a few mistakes made in the film, but these are very hard to notice.

The storyline of the film I thought was very good, and one point in the film I think almost had me on the edge of my sofa, because it was that anticipating. There are a few points where I thought that it went on for a bit longer than it should of, and as a result when I first saw it in the cinema, I decided to go to the toilet, as not to miss anything more exciting that could of happened later on.

Overall, I thought that this film was good, as at least 100 of the 105 minutes is worth at least seeing, before brushing it off your shoulders.
