What can i say? Brilliant film.
let me start with this: i love cars. ever since i was little i have loved the shape, the smell, the colour, the deisgn, the ideas- everything about cars; with the first Fast and the Furious film, i was intoxicated, i have watched the film so many times that i know every word that is said.
when this film was advertised, i thought that it was going to be a let down what with there being no characters carried over from the first two films- watch out for the twist at the end!
however, this film has to be rated on its individuality and not based on the two preceeding films. it has everything: action, drama, it keeps you guessing, takes turns that you don't expect, and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
i have to say that it is as good as the first two, and that is about it- not meaning to sound negative as it is a brilliant film and i loved it, but i also loved the first two. the drifting element opened up a whole new avenue for me and having it set in Tokyo only adds to the excitement and the thrill of the scenes that fly by with the pace and intensity of the film.
the film starts off in the United States, where the main character has a a race against a red Dodge Viper convertible for 'bragging rights' and the driver of the viper's girlfriend. they shoot through a building site, and both end up in hospital when things take a turn for the worse. the guy in the viper and his girlfriend are too 'hooked up' to get into trouble with the police, and so our hero (the main character- Sean) is sent on aplane to live with his Dad in Tokyo. he is sent to a Tokyo school and falls for a girl who happens to be the girlfriend of 'DK'- Drift King.
after a race (which Sean loses as he has no idea about how to drift) he is indebted to Hans (whose car he raced with and totaled). he is taught how to drift in a beautiful Mitsubishi Evolution, and has another race at the end of the film to race DK to stay in town. he has to race him because their feud has got out of Hans, and in the process, Hans was killed trying to protect Sean from a mad DK (racing through traffic in the streets of Tokyo- which is a brilliant scene and when you watch the second disc of features, you see how much planning and coordination it took to achiene this scene).
although this is sean's idea, it is set up by DK's uncle (who is basically the head of the Mafia out in Tokyo). sean wins with his Dad's car (a Mustang no less) and is allowed to stay and becomes the new DK. soon after, he races an old face from the Fast and the Furious and Hans' past (VIn Diesel).
as this is the 2 disc special edition, it includes a bonus second disc that includes many added extras. this second disc includes things such as: a look behind the scens of the film, extended scenes from the fast and thr furious, and alternate ending to the first fast and the furious film, tricking out a hot import car (same as on the first two films unfortunately) and all new extended scenes from 2 fast 2 furious.
on disc 1, there is a feature commentary with the director of the film Justin Lin, drifting school (where you see the actors learning how to do some of the drifting seen in the film), and the main feature film.
the whole film had me captivated from the opening sequence to the ending credits and song which stays in your head for ever!
i would reccomend this film whether you have seen the first two or not as it is part of the 'Fast and the Furious' name, but is a whole new world to be discovered...
