I do not know whether you have written an opinion on a dance CD before, but it is hard to describe all the songs separately because of the fact that it is all electronic sounds!

Anyway, this is The Prodigy’s second to latest offering, released in 1997 with ‘Music for the Voodoo People’ released in 1998 according to Audiostreet. I do not know of any other releases since, but I will say they have released other albums before these two, notably ‘Music For The Jilted Generation’.

Although you may not know it, Prodigy’s music is used in quite a commercialised way. ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ has been heard over football action (minus the words for obvious reasons!) because of its fast tempo in most of the song, which is played over fast moving action such as goals being scored etc. ‘Breathe’ and ‘Firestarter’ have also been used in adverts, again, usually without the words. ‘Mindfields’ is on the Matrix soundtrack, which, as you may know, I love!

Sorry about the title, relates to ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ which has quite an interesting video (not seen much of it) if you like porn movies. The videos to ‘Breathe’ and ‘Firestarter’ were also good, quite dark videos from the boys, allowing the tracks to gain more depth to them. I always feel a video helps with the thinking of a song.

The prodigy and people like Leftfield and the Chemical Brothers are known to be in the more performing dance genre also, and, seeing pictures in the inlay of them live… must be one excellent show they put on. It is this kind of music which has a following because it is not run-of-the-mill chart stuff, and people flock to see them perform at music events.

I am not going to say I am an expert on dance music etc. but I know that most of the chart stuff which you hear in clubs is usually only good if you are ‘out your head’ and this music from the likes of the Prodigy to me is far superior. More thought is put into this kind of music than most of the chart cr*p you may have heard. This, to me, is the darker side of dance, and is much more my style.

How many layers do you reckon it takes to make a dance tune in the charts? You have the base, the riff which is usually from a keyboard, and then maybe some symbol sounds which are to a beat also. Then, of course, the vocals… which are usually just to make the track more interesting. This is the kind of drivel which is popular in clubs, and, no offence to the artists and DJ’s, but it has one use, and that is to allow people to make fools of themselves when they look like walking vodka bottles. The Prodigy have much more depth.

The music follows the trail of most songs ever made, and that is to have a verse, a chorus, and then either a solo or a slow bit in the middle of the song to make it more interesting. Fair enough, I am not going to say that anyone should do otherwise.

The sounds that the Prodigy use are very varied. Take ‘Breathe’ for example. A fantastic base line, good lyrics, electronic sounds, a whipping sound (oh yes baby!) and other background noises which simply add to the meat of the song, giving it a full body, allowing your ears to pick up different levels, and never drift into some bored state of mind.

Diesel Power also features some rap/hip-hop, whatever you rap fans call it. Personally, don’t give a flying duck because it is what it is, and it is good. This track does not focus too much on the actual music to enable the lyrics to take over the song, but there is, as always, good beats in the background. The music is generally angry and the lyrics are mostly sung with a huge amount of passion which just shows you that these guys are serious, as well as seriously gifted.

I know some of you have musical taste many miles away from this style of music, but you must be able to relate to music that allows you to get pretty hyped up. On Jo Whiley’s radio show on Radio One, she does a ‘best track to ……………… to’ i.e. best track to revise to, best song to have on before going out etc. This album would contain songs which would be entered into the ‘best track to smash your room up to’ category. Played loud and proud, the varied beats get me going, and its almost like I am listening to one of my favourite rock albums. On today’s Namone show, ‘Breathe’ was named as one of the songs you could play to get hyped up before an exam.

After smashing up my room, getting a slap from my mum and then looking for the Yellow Pages for a skip hire company, I found that the album case was a bit damaged, no probs though, CD was in the player which, although had skipped a bit, was still in one piece. The energy that can be transferred from the music into the body is amazing, and is easily an album that Wimbledon FC should have in their changing rooms before going out onto the pitch!

The variation on this album is good, with riffs from the whipping chain to a Chinese sounding noise played in ‘Mindfields’. The base lines are all the same in most of chart-dance that I hear in the clubs, either dumpf dumpf dumpf, or boom boom-boom-boom, as it were (!) but the base-lines on this album reminds me of a rap or hip-hop album, where dance music is obviously played in the background behind the lyricist. The beats vary from being very continuous and very prominent in the tracks to being slightly more in the background.

Although I have not given my usual description of a music album, I think the more traditional writing style incorporated in other opinions, was OK.

The band decided that lyrics were needed to make the album more interesting, and although there are not a lot of lyrics in all of the songs in the album, a chosen few from each of the ten tracks in running order:

1. Smack My Bitch Up: 5:42
"Change my pitch up
Smack my bitch up"

2. Breathe: 5:35
"Breathe with me…
Breathe the pressure
Come play my game I'll test ya
Psychosomatic addict insane"

3. Diesel Power: 4:18
"Yeah, I'm on the energy source
The cosmic force
With Prodigy
Kicking astrology
My intellect's the power
With Diesel Power"

4. Funky Sh*t: 5:16
"Oh my god that's the funky sh*t" (only lyrics)

5. Serial Thrilla: 5:11
"Taste Me, Taste Me
Succumb to me, Succumb to me
Serial Thrilla, serious killa"

6. Mindfields: 5:40
"This is dangerous, Open up your head feel shell shock
This is dangerous, I walk through mindfields so watch your head rock"

7. Narayan: 9:06
"You feel another energy
An I feel power through it"

8. Firestarter: 4:40
"I'm the trouble starter, punkin' instigator.
I'm the fear addicted, danger illustrated.
I'm a firestarter, twisted firestarter,
you're the firestarter, twisted firestarter.
I'm the bitch you hated, filth infatuated.
Yeah, I'm the pain you tasted, well intoxicated"

9. Climbatize: 6:38
(no lyrics)

10. Fuel My Fire: 4:19
"Yeah, my layers are thick,
And I got a bad attitude.
Yeah, that knife in my back,
has fingerprints that belong to you."

Sorry, quite a few there actually! I was hoping to make them last just a little bit, but never mind, mark me down if you wish, I just thought it would be a nice touch.

At 56:25 minutes long, and with ten stompin’ tracks, this is an album most the younger generation could be inclined to like because it communicates so well.

The inlay is quite good too. It does not have the words, but it has some pictures of the boys, a nice animation of them, and has a quite a strange little commentary thing going on. Namely:
Steel?
We have no Butter,
But I ask you
Would you rather have butter or guns?
Shall we import lard or steel?
Let me tell you
Preparedness makes us powerful.
Butter merely makes us fat.
Lard?

Bit strange, but I won’t argue with them!

Ta.

P.S. I do not advocate the hitting of animals, especially dogs. That’s partly aimed at you Peter if you are reading this.

Great op, I wasn't sure how you'd tackle an op on the Prodigy, but you did it very well. This album is so good for sticking on after a bad day!
