I first discovered Taylor Swift about two and a bit years ago on Youtube and instantly got drawn to her song "Teardrops on My Guitar" which I downloaded along with her first self-titled debut album. Taylor's first album was amazing, so Fearless had a lot to live up to!!
I couldn't wait 'till the UK release date (9th March '09), so I got it imported a few days after it was released in the US (November '08), and I have listened to at least one of her songs everyday since! Fearless is a fresh, pop-country album which most people would instantly think would only be popular with teenage girls, but I think her voice and songs would suit most people even if they don't usually listen to this genre of music, I am sure they will fall in love with it! Also, she wrote every single song on Fearless, so when Taylor sings, you can really tell the words come deep from the heart with a lot of emotion. Yes I admit, a lot of the lyrics are to do with teenage problems, but then again, who hasn't been there before?
Tracks...
1. Fearless A fabulous opener for
an album. Very catchy, but also a very subtle, calm song. Written about when she is with a boy, she feels fearless. 8/10
2. Fifteen Another slow calm song, but extremely captivating. I think Fifteen is the song from Fearless which she has sung with the most emotion. Taylor sings about being fifteen and has revealed numerous times that this song is about her freshman year of high school. She explains that she thought she was all-that in her freshman year, later to discover thats not what its all about. Swift said that she felt like she grew up her freshman year more than any other year of her life. Her best friend Abigail which she met freshman year, is also mentioned in this song. 9/10
3. Love Story As to date, Love Story is the biggest selling and popular song Taylor Swift has released. It's a mid-tempo song about her dating a boy of who her family and friends do not approve of, very similar to "Romeo and Juliete", hence the fact that a lot of the lyrics in Love Story have relations to "Romeo and Juliete". A very catchy song! 8/10
4. Hey Stephen An upbeat, fun and flirty song, about a boy called Stephen who doesn't realize Taylor loves him. Doesn't show off her vocals that well as it does stay pretty much the same tempo, speed and dynamics all the way through. 7.5/10
5. White Horse Another very captivating and heart-warming song. A fairly slow, country-pop ballad mainly backed up with the piano. Again, Taylor sings with exceptional emotion in this song about being rejected by a boy but dreaming of a fairy tail that he will come back and save her on his white horse. 8.5/10
6. You Belong With Me A very fun, fairly fast-tempo, upbeat song. She sings about a boy who is not available but is dating a girl who doesn’t see him the way she does. You Belong With Me shows off Swift’s vocals quite a lot as well. 8/10
7. Breathe This song features backing vocals from fellow American singer Colbie Caillat, whom I also am a big fan of. But unfortunately, something about this song just doesn’t make it like the rest in the album. It’s a fairly slow song sung about a boy who she can’t live without. 6/10
8. Tell Me Why A lovely, sweet, fast song about her boyfriend who is making her life very upsetting, but she knows that she’s strong enough to stand up for herself. An easy understanding song. 8/10
9. You’re Not Sorry A slow song mainly on the piano about a boy who only lets her down and he isn’t sorry anymore after all that he’s done. Taylor said in a interview that You’re Not Sorry is her favourite song on Fearless. 7.5/10
10. The Way I Loved You Another upbeat song, but starts off slow which builds up. Sung about how she loved a boy, but in most relationships, you wouldn’t love like the way she did. 8/10
11. Forever and Always This was a last minute addition to the album written about Joe Jonas who Swift dated for a period of time. It is about their love breaking down. One of my favourites on the album, shows off Swift’s vocals well! 9/10
12. The Best Day One of the songs I don’t always remember, mainly because it’s very slow and sung quite quietly, but still with a lot of emotion. Taylor sings back over her childhood. 7/10
13. Change This song featured on the USA Team Soundtrack for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A very driven, motivated song with attitude about how you can beat down your rivals. She also said it has an alternative meeting for competition... The Olympics is either make it or break it, and this song encompasses that. 8/10
I would recommend iTunes as the best place for you to download Fearless (£7.99), features 17 songs including lots of bonus features such as a cover of Rihanna's Umbrella which is really good and videos, interviews etc.
There isn't one song I don't like and Fearless certainly has lived up to Taylor's standards, she is already the biggest selling artist in the US for 2008, Fearless has been one of the longest albums at number one on the Billboard 200 and the seventh longest-running number-one album by a female artist in the Billboard 200 history at only 19 and she is yet to become a global superstar!!
