My hubby was listening to the charts a while a go and I heard the song 'Love story' and really liked it which is why I ended up with this album. I had no idea who Taylor Swift was and still don't which is why I am not going to use this review to explain about who she is, where she lives and what chocolate bar is her favorite. This review is purely based on my opinion of the album that I have been listening to for the past few months.
When I first listened to the album, it really got on my nerves and I put it down for a few weeks before going back to it. Initially I felt that it had such a cheesy American feel to it that I just couldn't see past that. It grated against me but I realised how shallow I was being and thought it was worth looking beyond that and really listening into it so I put it on my Ipod.
All of the songs on the album tell a real story and you can tell Taylor has written them from personal experiences. There are a particular few that take you through an experience from beginning to end which gives the listener hope. Taylor covers things like falling out with friends, falling in love at a young age and being hurt in relationships.
The album has an easy listening feel to it because the lyrics are very easy to understand and I personally can familiarize with a lot of what she is saying. I wouldn't say that Taylor is a deep thinker like someone like Amy Macdonald who has a very mature way of writing. Like I say they are easy to listen to with a country feel to them and you don't need to have a Master's graduate to disect each line because it's plain.
I don't think Taylor's voice is anything special as I normally prefer a darker tone to female's voices but it's definitely not bad. She has a very strong Texan accent in all of her songs which I think adds a lot of character to her music and she has great control over her voice. I find that she is very easy to listen to because her voice isn't too intrusive.
As with most albums, some of the songs are stronger than others and some stand out more than others. I particularly like 'Breath' which tells the story of how she split up with a boyfriend and how she can't cope without him. She covers how they were so in love that she doesn't know how to be her own person on her own. The harmonies in this song make it a cut above the rest and makes shivers run down my spine when she hits the chorus. The song has a real emotion to it and makes me feel like I want to cry every time. The song includes some beautiful violin and finger picking on the guitar which gives it a depth.
Another of my favourites is 'Fifteen' which is about is all about starting college and how you are nervous. It goes on to tell the listener about how the boys will try to 'woo' you and tell you they love you. It's a bit of warning and Taylor tells you that you are only young and just take a breath before you start to believe it. Eventually she tells of a friend who eventually gave away her virginity to a boy because she got sucked into believing that one boy would be with her forever. It reminded me how I was like when I was in my teens, believing every word that came out of a guy's mouth. It didn't take me long to realize and not believe them but I loved the way that it gives a warning to young girls today. It's more fast paced than breath and takes the listener through all sorts of emotions as she tells her story.
I find the whole album a real feel good album that really picks me up when I am down and makes me want to sing the songs a loud as I walk down the road. I can appreciate that it's not for everyone and can't imagine that my big, 6'2 hubby wanting to listen in!
