Ain't no doubt it's Jimmy Nail!
Review of Nail File, The - Jimmy Nail by  Mel27

Advantages: Big hit singles
Disadvantages: A few average tracks

...by is something I can relate to (though I'm not so old I can remember trams!). Apparently Jimmy was a bit hesistant about using the line "that was when coal was king" in case people thought he meant footballer Andy Cole! I'm sure nobody did though especially as Jimmy's throaty voice almost wails "this was a big river, I want you all to know". A beautiful wistful ballad. I'm a bit disappointed that "Laura" and "Beautiful" aren't on this album. The only other big hit single that seems to here is "Calling Out Your Name" which again, is a country-tinged track. It's much more "rocky" than the previous country ballads though. "Absent Friends" contains the brilliant Gary Moore on guitar and "Black And White" features reggae artiste Rankin' Roger. Like most good artistes, Jimmy likes to span different genres. Here is the full track listing... Read review

Jimmy Eat world have good FUTURES
Review of Futures [ECD] - Jimmy Eat World by  kylecoare

Advantages: Some great tunes, top vocals,
Disadvantages: bit too long, no good for people who hate ballads!

..., and a lot better. The album did quite well and gained the band a good few fans, then they were dumped by their record company, typical. ‘Clarity’ did have some very good songs on it and was well mixed and although not an instant listener it was a grower. So label less and without a manager the band could quite easily have split up, but nope not these guys, they went on lots of tours saving as much money as they could and recorded a new album ‘Bleed America’, which was later changed to ‘Jimmy Eat World’ due to 9-11. The band was then signed to Dreamworks and released the album, then they seemed to be everywhere, the singles from the album did well appearing on both radio and Tv. You could check my previous review to hear about this album. Anyway so after a 3 year gap the band are back with their fifth album. BAND MEMBERS... Read review

Jimmy who?
Review of And Someone Left The Cake Out In The Rain (The Classic Songs Of Jimmy Webb) - Various Artists by  mongo_bongocat

Advantages: Great introduction to a songwriting genius
Disadvantages: Will not be to everybody's taste

...of which are included here. When Jimmy was on the money, his writing couldn't be matched. He really was that good. I was fortunate to catch Jimmy live in England last year. Although now in his early sixties he's still full of energy and fun (full of banter of his frolics with drinking buddy Richard Harris whilst in England and Ireland). He played to a small crowd of around 200 and for the most part everyone was transfixed to this rather unremarkable man sat at his piano. Jimmy's own voice is pretty good and he sings on the one song on this compilation (the rather pleasant 'Didn't We'). Even the most hard hearted of listeners would not begrudge Jimmy the opportunity to sing one of his own tunes. If you don't think you know Jimmy Webb or his music, I'm willing to bet you'll be pleasantly suprised when you give this collection of songs... Read review
