I would just like to say that this review can be found in a few other sources. However since these are my words and thus copyrighted to me i do not see the harm in copying my review of this artists latest album here. That said. On with the review
After listening to the album a minimum of 10 times in a 4-day period I feel it is time for a review. Some people {One a fellow reviewer} seem to think that Norah Jones is a Jazz singer. She of course is not jazz. It is made evident once again how she is so good at resisting being pinned down to any label. There are elements of Jazz, soul, country and even an element of rock music in some of the songs. Once again the shear range of musical genres this album crosses is outstanding. Yet at the end this is a better album then come away with me. There are no more half finished songs in "feels like home".
In her debut album there were a few songs that were weak. "One flight down" for instance is a beautiful song but it is just over 3 minutes long. It does not feel finished. The same can be said for "7 years". In "feels like home there is no more of that. Every song is played out to the full and allowed to finish naturally. In this album she has changed her style completely. It is more country then the last one but still even in the songs that are obviously country there are elements of the other genres she would do well in. {if she would settle down to a style} There are not so many obvious love songs in "feels like home". There are some happy songs, some sad songs, and a few songs that are about everyday things.
The songs in order are
Sunrise:
This song’s about two people who are apart during the day. The sun rises and they have to part ways. The clocks been on 915 for hours and the sunrise takes them by shock. Then they both part ways and later the night comes again. And with the night she gets to be with him again. It’s a very vague song. However this does not matter when one listens to it. You get this sense of calm. It’s a beautiful song.
What am I to you?
This song is about a woman’s question to her partner. She asks him "what am I to you"? She then goes on to explain what he is to her and everything she does for him. How she comforts him when he is blue and how she has done all these things
to show her love for him. During explaining all this she asks him whether he would be there for her if her world collapsed around her would he support her like she supports him? What things has he done to show his love for her? "Could you find a love in me, would you carve me in a tree, don’t fill my heart with lies". Basically the message of the song is tell me baby do you love me like I love you? If you don’t love me then leave me cause I don’t want to be hurt by a love that is not there. So tell me "what am I to you"
Those sweet words:
In short this song is about a song. It’s like "one flight down" but this one is happy. The one who watches the singer cant hear the sweet words because her ears wont stop ringing long enough to allow her to what the singer is singing. Then the night comes and all is quite. Except both of them can’t sleep. The one in her room cant sleep and the other appears. She invites the other in and is glad to see the other again. She just wants to here the others sweet words. Really you can interpret this as either being a love song or being a song about 2 friends who really enjoy each other’s company. Whatever way you interpret it however does not affect the beauty of this brilliant song.
Carnival town:
This song is haunting. When I listen to this I get the impression of being on the rides and laughing at the clown. Except things slow right down and out of nowhere Jones asks, "Did you really have fun?" The underlying message in this song is the questioning of how much fun you can actually have a t a carnival. The slow pace of the song puts you in the impression that time has slowed right down. On the carousel you are moving fast but you are not going nowhere. So what’s the point of it? Where’s the fun? Then on the Ferris wheel you get so high but you are just looking down on where you were. What’s the point? Then, the clown. Yea he made you laugh but it’s so shallow. It’s an act and after the act the clown has gone home. After a brief spell of fun you are still lonely after the carnival.
In the morning;
You would be forgiven for thinking this was another love song. Pay attention and you would see the wrongness of that assumption. This song is about...Coffee. Yes that’s right it’s about Coffee and the addictiveness of it. "Hot like a shady corner inside a violin, Hot like to burn my lips I know I can’t win". After this you start to notice what its about. This guy finds out just how addicted to coffee he is. He wants to not be addicted to it and he asks his girlfriends help. She tries to help him with tea and sympathy but at the end of the day it don’t matter. He’s a slave to the caffeine and he can’t get off it. In the end he is still as addicted to it as the start. This song is one of the best "play on words" songs I ever heard. A truly brilliant song.
Be here to love me:
This is a Towns Van Santd classic about 2 people who get drunk in western style America. I wont analyse this song for that very reason. Suffice to say Norah does a brilliant version of this song. It’s probably the most country song on the whole album.
Creeping in:
How weird are these songs going to get? This one’s about a hole in an old shoe that the singer is wearing. She steps in water and where does it go? Through the hole. It’s a duet she is doing with an old country singer called Dolly Parton. Parton seems to be on a different wavelength when she starts singing about a silver moon that is disturbing her sleep. {Go figure} I suppose it ties in with the hole in the shoe in which the moons light snuck on in to the room. Then Norah and Dolly finish the last verse together. Despite the fact that this song is way strange it still sounds good. Since Carnival town {with the exception of "be here to love me"} these songs have been getting weirder and weirder. However "creeping in" despite its weirdness has a good tempo to it and is a fun song to listen to.
Toes:
Another really weird song. This is perhaps one of the best songs on the whole album. It seems to be about a woman who rally wants to be in some water. She walks along the edge of a river in the real shallow parts and stops to rest on an embankment. Then she wakes up after dreaming of swimming with the fish. She then walks miles to find a part of the water she can swim in. Afterwards she comments on the spoilt sun that has to have its own stubborn way in drying her. This is because being wet she was refreshed. However it’s a hot summers day and after her swim she is dried up again. It’s a strange song but it is also one of the best songs I have ever heard. Though I don’t get its meaning. Oh well it’s a brilliant song anyway.
Humble me
in years to come this song am going to be inspirational to future artists who are similar to Norah. It’s a fantastic sad melody about this woman whose car has broken down in the middle of nowhere. She doesn’t want to call her ex but she has no choice. She feels so guilty about the way she treated him and it seems that she is humbled by the lord God and sees this as punishment for the way she treated her ex. That’s the first part. After it seems as though she is talking to her ex on the phone. "Baby Teresa she got your eyes, I see you all the time" is an indication of this. She tells him what she here’s what he’s been up too and it seems that she tells him over the phone that Truths not spoken out loud will tear you apart. It is evident that she misses them being together but feels like them starting a relationship together again is remote. This is a religious song about a woman who believes she is being punished by god for the way she treated her ex. That’s the reason for the words "you humble me lord" This is such a sad song. Its one of the best songs I have ever heard. A true work of magic
above ground:
This song is about a person who is on her way to meet someone. She is shy and needs to work up the courage to go and meet that person. She eventually does so. She is underground allegedly at a train station and she has arranged to meet someone above ground. This song sounds really good. The lyrics are simple and in some places sparse. However Norah is the type of singer who sounds good when drawing notes out. And that’s what you here on this song. Its good. I like it.
The long way home:
Its cover. This time the song is written and originally performed by a guy called Tom Waits. It’s about 2 lovers lives. Suffice to say that is all I will reveal. All you need to know is that Norah version of this song is brilliant. Norah’s voice seems to echo brilliantly in this. One of the 5 best songs on the album in my opinion.
The prettiest thing:
This song is about pretty things. It’s a strange song that once again escapes from Norah’s unfair label of being called a love song singer. This proves everyone wrong in that regard. It’s a strange song about several real pretty things the singer has seen. "The prettiest thing I ever did see, was lighting from the top of a cloud" It carries on from here to explain several pretty things she has seen. It don’t hurt that her voice is a very pretty thing indeed. I really like this song. It’s awesome. It is probably another of the great songs on this album.
Don’t miss you at all:
This is Norah’s word’s to the tune Melancholia. The band, take a break in this song. This is Duke Ellington’s piano playing to the song called melancholia. All Norah really does in this song is change the lyrics. However she has already done much because the Piano peace is hard. I know this because I have tried to do it too. She claims to not miss him but she does miss him terribly. I don’t have much to say about this. It’s a tradition she is starting to fall into. At the end of “come away with me” her last song was perhaps the jazziest on the album. And it seems the same trick works twice for Norah. It’s a real good song that throws away any doubts of Norah’s talent.
The final verdict is this. If you want an album to relax to whilst in the bath then you should get this. If you want to relax your chosen spouse for a romantic evening then play this. If you want something to dance to then don’t get this. If you want something that is angst ridden then don’t get this. You should get this album for when the first two situations pop up in your life.
