A Few Words About Ferns

The name Fern applies to over 20,000 different species of Plant that all belong to the Botanical Genus of Pteridophyta. They are grown widely in the UK and some species also grow wild but the commonest varieties are normally grown either indoors or outdoors to add foliage to other areas. I have a fern on my Kitchen Windowsill that I acquired as a little baby from a friend last year. I have no idea what type of Fern it is but it must be one of the common indoor varieties because I have seen this same Plant in several Garden Centres recently. Despite my eagerness to find out the true identity of my Plant this has so far eluded me. Every time that I stumble upon one it is simply labelled "Fern." The term Pteridophytes is often used to describe any type of seedless Vascular Plant so this term has become synonymous with Ferns ...

BOSE: Music for the soul

Advantages: Great sound quality, perfet at loud volumes, just in general FANTASTIC
Disadvantages: none so far

Ferns, great for shady places

Advantages: Great for shady places
Disadvantages: Keep well watered or they suffer

We've got a shady area in our back garden where nothing will grow. It faces north, and so it never gets any sun, and it's cold there even in summer. Everything we plant is ok for a couple of weeks, then starts to grow long and lanky, trying to get some light, then it dies. I'd never considered ferns, they're boring, aren't they? Anyway, I was fed up of seeing bare ground so I bit the bullet and got 3 assorted ferns from the local nursery, and planted them. The ferns I bought were: Dryopteris filix-mas, (Male fern), Asplenium trichomanes (Maidenhair spleenwort) and Polypodium glycyrrhiza (Liquorice fern). They were £3.99 each, in 3litre pots.
