The Final Cut is not the best introduction to Pink Floyd as it is essentially a Roger Waters solo album.

Having parted company with Nick Mason and Richard Wright after the Wall album and tour, there was only David Gilmour left to stop the total control of Pink Floyd was complete. However it backfired sensationally as the future would attest.

The songs on this album are very dark and introspective. A topic ranging from what happens to our war heroes (The Fletcher Memorial Home) nuclear holocaust (Two Suns in The Sunset) and personal neurosis (The Final Cut) not exactly a laugh a minute.

David Gilmour’s contributions are very slight apart from the rocky Not Now John (British workers apathy), which is so at odds with the rest of the album apart from the lyrics, it has Gilmours stamp of class throughout. Elsewhere he only has a few lead guitar breaks to enliven the proceedings. Always the tasteful player Gilmours guitar playing is criminally underused but his solos shine. He disowned the album when it came out leaving the band to fizzle out into court actions over who had rights to the name. Roger Waters lost and this left Gilmour the opportunity to take over where the Wall left off without their dominating leader bringing back old members and embarking on a mega rich few years whilst Waters played to half empty halls. They could never bury the hatchet except into each other.
Even Gilmour has lost interest now as activity has ceased on the Floyd front and will for the foreseeable future.

I really like the album but while it will not be to everyone’s taste it’s perfect for a melancholy mood.
Thought provoking, pass the razor blades!!
