I first time I heard of Snow Patrol is when they released the song "Run" and that was a pretty good start. It was only when i heard the song "Spitting games" that i knew they were something else. I bought the album confident it was going to be decent, but i was in for much better than that.
"How to be dead" The opening track on this album is very melodic, ironic because of what its actually conveying. We hear how a drug problem takes away a sense of reality and about trying to understand the nature of how much damage it causes perhaps. A brilliant start to the album and the suttle manner its presented with contrasts nicely with the serious message it conveys.
"Wow" More up tempo from the first track, great sounding intro with the guitar and drums coming in nicely. The songs basically trying to convey the trust and indeed
faith need in relationships. Really well done song.
"Gleaming Auction" Starts off very lightly before it really begins to kick in. Unusual sounding to begin with a little much to take in first time round, grew on me greatly. Defintaly one to give a few listens just to take it all in.
"Whatevers left" Blends well with the first track as when it starts its almost a seemless progression into this track. Flat vocals meet a great guitar, the vocals gradually become much stronger whenthe chorus comes in, adding to the whole thing building up nicely.
"Spitting Games" Simply unbelivable track, one of the best on this album if not the best. Personal favourite, convaying those feelings of shyness towards the opposite sex and indeed being unable to act upon them. A song we've all been through at some stage of our youth. Great sounding instrument and chorus wise throughout this amazing track. The song that made me buy this album.
"Chocolate" Calms things down from spitting games. Its a very upbeat song and the thumping drum beat is pretty damn good. One of the singles that was released from this album I believe.
"Run" The song that put Snow Patrol on the map and first gained my intrest in them. Its sounds very different than anything else on the album but somehow still works. Haunting and moving, its put across like its the last words uttered to a loved one. Their biggest hit to date and its easy to see or rather hear why.
"Grazed Knees" Deals with the theme of faith in relations that seems to be one of the underlying features of this album. Very melodic with some soft violin featured at certain intervals. Sounds great.
"Ways and Means" Adds a bit more edge to the feelings convayed in grazed kness. Feels like it has a just bit more edge. Ties in well with the relationship theme.
"Tiny little Fractures" A much more upbeat and faster paced album in contrast to the last three tracks. Its got that early 90's feel, which is very welcomed and sounds brilliant.
"Somewhere there is a clock ticking" Another slower track on the album, but much darker and haunting than "grazed knees" and "ways and means". Great chorus and feels stronger as it gets towards the end.
"Same" This is a more gentle track than the previous one. The piano is pretty good in this one and the track while not one of the stronger on the album is pretty good. The chorus is pretty good too.
Bonus Tracks (UK)
"We can all run away now theyre dead and gone" Very relaxed and gentle guitar in this one. More of a relaxing number. Not too bad at all.
"half the fun" The strong guitar and thumping drums help up the pace in this great track. finishes the album on an upbeat note with the relationship element coming through again. the vocals are slightly distorted it seems, which works great on this track. Ends very abruptly though.
This album is a cut above its competition this year. One of the few great prospects to look out for and an album i've been waiting for some time now. Strong and original throughout, just go buy it.

I saw them in George Square in Glasgow on New Years Eve and they were excellent. They have been around for AGES though, and my mate has propped up the bar in the Art School union with them many a time! drew

I would put this into the top albums of the year - with all the other rubbish that is out there! Desiree x

Advantages: A strong refreshingly British album Disadvantages: Not a band that will automatically stick out and make you remember them ala the Darkness

Review of Final Straw - Snow Patrol
Advantages: Thought provoking, unoffensive, easy to listen to Disadvantages: Been done before and will be done again, not the livliest music in the world
Advantages: Swirling melodies and itchy guitars, thematic and emotive Disadvantages: No real variation in the songs, they're either grunge-y or mellow-y
